Are you a diet soda drinker? You might want to rethink your beverage choice.
A new study shows diet sodas may not be a healthier option. Many Americans turn to diet soda in an effort to stay away from the liquid calories found in non-diet sodas. New research suggests diet soda drinkers still overeat and gain weight.

Diet soda, not the answer for weight loss

The study, conducted at Purdue, suggests our bodies get confused with diet sodas. Our body expects something sweet to bring calories with it and when it doesn’t happen our body feels as though it needs more calories.

“You get this kind of confusion and that can lead to overeating, and at least in the animal model that can lead to an increase in blood sugar spikes,” Susie Swithers, a professor of psychological sciences and a behavioral neuroscientist said.

Swithers says diet soda drinkers give themselves more leeway with calories.  In other words, it’s okay to order fries because they’re drinking a diet soda.

Debate about the study

The American Beverage Association denies the results because the research was a review of other studies.

“This is an opinion piece not a scientific study,” the said in an emailed statement to USA Today. “Low-calorie sweeteners are some of the most studied and reviewed ingredients in the food supply today. They are a safe and an effective tool in weight loss and weight management, according to decades of scientific research and regulatory agencies around the globe.”

Overall message

Fidgeting, weight loss, skinny, anxiety, diet
The study also suggests diet soda drinkers are more likely to have heart disease.

For those addicted to diet soda, here’s what you should know:

“The take-home message is for people to be much mindful of how much sweetener, whether artificial or sugar, they’re actually consuming,” Swithers said.

“We’re talking about a health issue here. We’re not talking necessarily just about weight gain or weight loss. … Science suggests that people who drink soda regularly end up with worse outcomes.”
