I Have Diabetes. Can Xenical Work for Me?

Obesity is a true epidemic of modern times. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), its prevalence has tripled since 1975. This is concerning, as obesity can lead to health issues like Type 2 Diabetes and even erectile dysfunction (ED). Doctors recommend weight loss pills such as Xenical to their patients, but is Xenical safe to take when you have Type 2 Diabetes? And what is the link between diabetes, obesity and ED? Read below to learn more.

What’s Type 2 Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition affecting your body’s sugar (glucose) metabolism, but we still don’t know exactly how this disease happens. The Mayo Clinic names several risk factors that increase your chances of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

These risk factors include:

  • being overweight
  • limited physical activity
  • having a parent, brother or sister with diabetes
  • hormonal problems such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women

Type 2 diabetes can also lead to other health complications. Among the most common are:

  • cardiovascular disease
  • kidney and neural damage
  • eyesight problems

Taking blood sugar level.

The Link between Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity

Obesity, defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater, is a health and economic challenge in the US and around the world. A decade ago, the annual costs of treatment for obesity-related conditions in the United States were at $147 billion. And things are getting worse.

“From 1999–2000 through 2017–2018, the prevalence of obesity increased from 30.5% to 42.4%, and the prevalence of severe obesity increased from 4.7% to 9.2%.”

How is Obesity Linked to Type 2 Diabetes?

People who are exceedingly overweight have more fatty acids, certain hormones, and pro-inflammatory markers in their bodies. These substances contribute to insulin resistance and/or the dysfunction of pancreatic cells.

Still, not all people who are obese develop diabetes. It turns out that distribution of body fat is one of the key factors here. According to some studies, men whose waistlines were over 40.2 inches (104 cm) and women whose measurements exceeded 34.7 inches (88 cm) were at a three times higher risk of developing diabetes.

How Type 2 Diabetes (and Obesity) Impact Erectile Function

Both excessive weight and diabetes can increase your chances of developing ED, because erectile problems are typically caused by cardiovascular issues and nerve damage. It is well-established that obesity and diabetes negatively impact heart health and nerve function.

What’s more, according to the CDC, diabetics have a double or triple risk of developing depression.

“In 2018, the Journal of Sexual Medicine published a review of 42 studies ED and depression. The authors reported that men with depression had a 39% increased risk for ED.”

Xenical for Weight Loss: Is It Safe for Diabetics?

Obesity, diabetes, and ED can form a vicious cycle. Addressing at least one of them may kickstart positive health changes in other areas. Doctors typically prescribe drugs like Xenical to obese patients to help with weight loss.

How does it work? Xenical works by preventing your body from absorbing some of the fat you consume. For the medicine to work, you need to watch out for fat consumption.

Is Xenical safe to take when you have diabetes? Yes! It’s a drug commonly chosen by doctors for obese patients. Make sure to mention all medications you currently take.

Keep in mind that Xenical may cause some side effects, though they are usually only temporary. For example, most people say their bowel movements change – their stools became more oily. To prevent this uncomfortable change, aim for well-balanced meals that don’t contain more than 30% of fat.
