About one third of Americans are obese, according to the CDC.

A new report from Cornell University shows skipping breakfast might be helpful in the battle against the bulge. While this study shows breakfast-skippers actually consumed fewer calories throughout the day, another study shows missing breakfast is bad for your heart.

Skip breakfast, consumer fewer calories

The Cornell study followed a group of college students. The group was split in two groups: breakfast eaters and breakfast skippers. While the group that skipped breakfast felt hungry before lunchtime, they actually consumed 400 calories less throughout the day than the breakfast eaters.

“The problem in our culture is that we consume too many calories, and we have to look around at ways to help us consume less,” David Levitsky, study author and professor of nutritional sciences and of psychology at Cornell, tells CNN.

“And we found that if you are trying to lose weight, then skipping breakfast isn’t necessarily the worst thing for you to do.”

Skip breakfast, battle heart problems

A separate study from Harvard shows different results when people skip breakfast. This study, which followed 27,000 men for 16 years, shows men who didn’t eat in the morning were 27% more likely to experience a heart attack or to die as the result of coronary heart disease attack.

Harvard’s study focuses on the long-term effects of not eating breakfast, rather than the caloric intake.

Leah Cahill, study author and research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health says skipping breakfast strains the body.

Skipping breakfast could put additional strain on your heart.
Skipping breakfast could put additional strain on your heart.

“As we sleep all night we are fasting, and so if we regularly do not ‘breakfast’ in the morning, it puts a strain on our bodies that over time can lead to insulin resistance, hypercholesterolemia and blood pressure problems, which can then lead to heart disease,” Cahill said.

The best advice

If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, the best advice is to eat a healthy breakfast. Go for fruit or oatmeal, something light but enough to get you going.
