Valtrex, Valacyclovir, and Acyclovir Pharmacy Prices, March 2020

The average prices of antiviral medications Valtrex, valacyclovir, and acyclovir were mixed in March 2020. However, all three were down sharply from their mid-2019 levels.

If you’ve been infected with the herpes simplex virus 1 or HSV2, you probably already know that there’s no cure for the periodic outbreaks these viral infections cause. However, there is help available to minimize both the frequency and severity of such outbreaks.

That help comes in the form of three powerful antiviral medications — Valtrex, its generic equivalent valacyclovir, and acyclovir, all of which are available by prescription only.

Prices Were Mixed in March

The average prices for these three drugs were mixed in March 2020, according to data from Secure Medical’s monthly review of select prescription drug prices. While prices for acyclovir and valacyclovir edged up slightly, the price for Valtrex was down from its level in February 2020.

Acyclovir’s average price of $1 per 400 mg tablet in March 2020 was up only a penny from its February price of 99 cents. Valacyclovir’s average price rose in March to $4 per 500 mg tablet, up five cents from its February price of $3.95.

Valtrex Price Declines

Moving in the opposite direction, price-wise, was Valtrex, which dropped from $14.53 per 500 mg tablet in February to $14.40 in March.

All three of these potent antivirals were down sharply in price from their levels in mid-2019. Acyclovir’s March 2020 price of $1 was down 81.8 percent from its July 2019 price of $5.50. Valacyclovir’s March 2020 price of $4 was 58.2 percent lower than its price of $9.58 in July 2019.

Although its price decline was less dramatic than either acyclovir or valacyclovir, Valtrex slipped 20.2 percent from $18.05 in July 2019 to $14.40 in March 2020.

Fighting HSV1, HSV2 Outbreaks

As previously noted, these medications help to reduce the severity of outbreaks caused by infection with the herpes simplex 1 and 2 viruses. They are also somewhat effective against adult outbreaks triggered by a reactivation of the herpes zoster virus (also known as varicella-zoster) that causes chickenpox in children and shingles in adults.

The herpes simplex virus 1 is most widely associated with the outbreak of cold sores and fever blisters, while HSV2 is responsible for attacks of genital herpes.

Once you’ve become infected with HSV1, HSV2, or herpes zoster, these viruses become your lifelong companions. They alternate between active and dormant phases. During the latter, they take up residence in your body’s nerve cells.

Take at First Sign of Outbreak

These antiviral medications are generally most effective if they are taken at the first sign of an outbreak. They inhibit the viruses’ ability to replicate and spread, so while they might not end an outbreak outright, they can significantly reduce the severity of that outbreak.
