Sexually transmitted diseases aren’t just for kids anymore. A recent study has revealed that STD’s are on the rise among the elderly. While people may prefer to not discuss the world of sexually active seniors, the truth is that the elderly are knocking boots more than you realize. But due to ignorance about STD’s, more and more seniors are contracting sexual diseases.
The American Association of Retired Persons reports that Chlamydia and HIV, previously mostly associated with the younger crowd, has risen over 40% between 2006 and 2010. The AARP credits this surprising jump in numbers to seniors not wearing condoms and men using erection pills frequently.
Experts believe the reason seniors aren’t utilizing condoms is because many seniors only associate condoms with protection against pregnancy. In fact, according to a study conducted by researchers at Indiana University, the percentage of condom users drops by ten percent as people get older. The study found that only ten percent of women between the age of 45 and 60 use condoms.
Experts stress that everyone, regardless of age, should get tested for STD’s. The elderly need to take more steps in getting educated in the world of sexual diseases.
