Prices of Propecia and its generic equivalent, finasteride, were up in February 2020 from their January levels. However, they were sharply lower than they were in July 2019.
The average prices of Propecia and finasteride, drugs that are considered the best available treatment against male pattern baldness, in February 2020 were roughly half what they were in July 2019.
The price of Propecia, the brand-name counterpart of finasteride, was $4.39 per 1 mg tablet, up three cents from its January level of $4.36, according to Secure Medical’s monthly review of prescription drug prices. However, that February price was down sharply from $8.81 in July 2019.
Finasteride Price Down to $2
Finasteride’s February price of $2.00 per 1 mg tablet was also up from January’s $1.68 but sharply lower than its July 2019 price of $5.80.
Finasteride, the active ingredient in, and generic equivalent of, Propecia, is recommended by the American Hair Loss Association as “the first line of attack for all men interested in treating their male pattern baldness.”
Neither Propecia nor finasteride is a cure for this most common form of hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia. However, the drugs have been proven effective in clinical trials. They stopped the progression of hair loss in 86 percent of men participating in trials and regrew hair in 65 percent of trial participants.
DHT Is the Primary Culprit
The primary culprit behind male pattern baldness is dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a derivative of testosterone that tends to shrink hair follicles to the point that they can no longer support hair growth. While Propecia and finasteride don’t attack DHT directly, they do inhibit an enzyme known as type II 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone to DHT. Using these drugs effectively reduces scalp levels of DHT.
Ordering Propecia and finasteride online has always been a popular option for those who prefer the convenience and privacy of online transactions. But with prices for these two drugs so low, ordering them online also makes good financial sense for everyone who uses them.
