Fighting the good fight against male pattern baldness? Clinical testing has shown that Propecia or finasteride, its generic equivalent, might be able to help. For those unfamiliar with Propecia, the brand-name drug was first marketed as Proscar and was designed to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. However, serendipitously, it was discovered that the medication also seemed to halt the hair loss caused by androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness. It also appeared to encourage the regrowth of hair in areas where hair had already been lost.

DHT Causes Hair Loss

The primary culprit in male pattern baldness is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone that gradually shrinks hair follicles to the point that they can no longer support healthy hair growth.

Propecia or finasteride reduces DHT levels by inhibiting the activities of an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase, which promotes the conversion of testosterone into DHT. The American Hair Loss Association recommends Propecia/finasteride as “the first line of attack for all men interested in treating their male pattern baldness.”

Our latest review of Propecia/finasteride prices nationwide reveals that the lowest prices for Propecia among conventional pharmacies can be found in the pharmacy departments of two supermarket chains located primarily in the Southeast. The cost of a 1-milligram dose of Propecia from Winn-Dixie is $4.04, but Publix, a regional competitor, isn’t far behind with $4.38 per 1-milligram dose. Among brick-and-mortar pharmacies, Winn-Dixie and Publix also have the lowest prices for finasteride, at $0.80 and $1.07, respectively. You can see it all at a glance in the following chart:

eDrugstore carries brand-name Propecia; a 1-milligram dose costs $5.41, a figure that is considerably lower than the vast majority of conventional pharmacies. A 1-milligram dose of finasteride from eDrugstore is estimated at $1.14.
