South Korean scientists are exploring new ways to treat male pattern baldness. However, for now, Propecia and finasteride offer the best hope for men fighting to keep their hair or regrow new hair.

Recent South Korean research into potential new treatments for hair loss runs the gamut from a food-based herbal remedy to the development of a new drug that could trigger the regrowth of hair in balding men.

On the low-tech end of the research spectrum, a research team at South Korea’s Dankook University conducted a small-scale study with 23 participants suffering from androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness.

A Probiotic-Rich Elixir

The centerpiece of the study, published in The World Journal of Men’s Health, is juice from a staple of Korean cuisine — kimchi, a highly spiced dish consisting of fermented vegetables, particularly cabbage. The probiotic-rich kimchi juice was combined with cheonggukjang, a fermented soybean paste that is also rich in probiotics.

The hypothesis behind the study was that the probiotic-rich supplement of kimchi and cheonggukjang would reduce blood levels of low-density lipoprotein, the so-called bad cholesterol, and thus increase blood flow to the scalp. And improved blood flow to the scalp, the researchers theorized, would help to promote the growth of new and thicker hair.

Results Are Promising

Over a period of four months, study participants were given an early morning drink of the kimchi-cheonggukjang elixir and another just before bedtime. At the end of one month, the mean hair count per square centimeter of scalp increased from 85 to 90. After four months, the mean hair count was up to 92 per square centimeter.

Equally impressive was a significant increase in the average thickness of hair in subjects taking the probiotic-rich drink. Scientists involved in the study also noted that new hair growth from this form of intensive probiotic supplementation tended to remain even after the therapy was discontinued.

New Peptide Developed

At the high-tech end of South Korean research into hair loss treatments was the development of a peptide that appears to target the protein that blocks the generation of new hair follicles. This could be an important breakthrough because it’s the gradual miniaturization of hair follicles that leads to the hair loss associated with male pattern baldness.

As outlined in an article at ScienceAlert.com, scientists at Yonsei University in Seoul discovered a peptide they dubbed PTD-BPD. When the peptide was applied to the skin of bald mice for 28 days, new hair follicles developed. They also found that new follicle development could be accelerated by inducing minor wounds to the skin of the mice. Previous studies have observed this same phenomenon in humans.

What Scientists Discovered

Summing up the findings of the research team he led, Choi Kang-Yeol, a professor at Yonsei University, said, “We have found a protein that controls the hair growth and developed a new substance that promotes hair regeneration by controlling the function of the protein.”

The protein that’s the primary culprit in hair loss is CXXC-type zinc finger protein 5 (CXXC5), and PTD-BPD is a substance that blocks the hair-loss effects of the protein. This study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

Current Treatments of Choice

While the findings from both these studies may result in new treatments for male pattern baldness, for now, the treatments of choice for this most common form of hair loss remain Propecia and its generic equivalent, finasteride. Both these products are available only by prescription.
