Hair loss is a widespread problem among men, beginning for some as early as their late teens and early 20s. Fortunately, treatments are available that can slow or even halt hair loss and in some case regrow hair that’s been lost.
Although it may be cold comfort to men who are beginning to experience hair loss, they should know that they’ve got plenty of company.
According to the American Hair Loss Association (AHLA), roughly two-thirds of all American men will experience some degree of hair loss by the time they’re 35 years of age. By the time they’re 50, 85 percent of men will see significant thinning of their hair.
Hair Loss Begins Earlier for Some
However, for even younger men — those who have not yet reached the age of 21 — the painful process of male pattern balding begins even earlier. That’s the bad news. However, there’s some good news to counterbalance that.
The earlier young men recognize the first signs of hair loss, the better their chances of taking steps to stop hair loss in its tracks and possibly regrow some of the hair that they’ve lost.
Treatments Are Available
Although hair loss has troubled men throughout the ages, it’s only been during the last three decades or so that they’ve had meaningful weapons to fight the balding process.
But first things first. How do you recognize the earliest signs of male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia? Here are some of the warning signs:
- Gradual and near-imperceptible hair loss usually occurs first at the temples, leading in time to an M-shaped hairline.
- An overall thinning of your hair occurs as fewer and fewer follicles are able to support hair growth. As this process progresses, your scalp may be visible beneath thinning hair.
- Accelerated thinning of the hair at the crown of your head may produce a clearly visible bald spot at that location.
New Drugs Win FDA Nod
Prior to the late 1980s, men who recognized these signs of hair loss could do little more than watch the fallout that followed. Things began to change in 1988, when the Food and Drug Administration approved minoxidil — under the brand name Rogaine — as a topical treatment to slow or halt hair loss.
Nearly a decade later, in 1997, the FDA gave its approval to an oral medication known as Propecia (finasteride) for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. It had previously been marketed as Proscar to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland.
Finasteride Considered Better
Although each of these medications has its merits, the AHLA today recommends finasteride as “the first line of attack” for men seeking to fight back against hair loss. The drug works by inhibiting an enzyme known as type 2 5-alpha reductase, which facilitates the conversion of the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. And DHT leads to hair loss because it tends to miniaturize hair follicles to the point that they can no longer support hair growth.
While the AHLA sees finasteride as the more effective weapon against male pattern hair loss, it still sees a role for minoxidil, particularly for those who fail to respond to treatment with finasteride.
