When it comes to hair loss, it can be an embarrassing problem for both men and women. Typically thinning hair is blamed on age or genetics, but a new study presented by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows an array of factors that play a role in hair loss. Being a divorcee, a widow, a heavy smoker or drinker can wreak havoc on one’s hairline according to the findings. Meanwhile new discoveries are also being made on men’s hair loss and new ways to regrow hair for both sexes.
The new finding surprise many
“Never before has the role of some of these contributors to hair loss been documented,” said Bahman Guyuron, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and study co-author. “While genetics remain a strong predictor of some types of hair loss, introducing certain stressful or unhealthy factors into a person’s life can result in more hair loss.”
Guyuron’s study centered around 84 sets of twins, which revealed surprising results.
“One study examined 84 female identical twins and found the strongest predictor of female hair loss was marital status. Those who were divorced or widowed exhibited more hair loss than married women. In addition, a large weekly consumption of alcohol led to higher levels of female hair loss along the front of the head. Heavy smoking was a significant contributor to female hair loss in the temple area. However, women who drank moderately – two alcoholic beverages a week – experienced significantly less temporal hair loss than their twin,” a press release stated.
A personal struggle
At 54 years old Katie Whittle starting noticing a small patch of hair thinning out. “I saw it happen over time and I just didn’t know what to do about,” she said. “It is something that really bothered me. I don’t consider myself a vein person but when it comes to a woman losing her hair, it is really bothersome and took a toll on my self-esteem.”
Whittle is getting hair transplants to deal with the problem, but says she never knew her smoking habit may have played a role in her hair loss.
“Wow, maybe if more people knew smoking could lead to hair loss they wouldn’t do it,” she said. “Trust me, no one wants to deal with baldness.”
