Podcast Synopsis:

John Bercaw is research and development manager for Beyond Coastal, an Environmental Working Group-recommended sun care products brand from Salt Lake City, Utah.
He joined the show to discuss why we should use sunscreen, exposure risks do outdoor athletes face, how much and how often should I apply sunscreen and more…

Eric Michaels: Why should I use sunscreen? What are the potential ramifications if I don’t?

John Bercaw: Prolonged exposure to the sun (particularly for athletes who spend even longer in the outdoors than the common person) can help speed up skin aging and potentially develop skin cancer. Many sunscreens on the market address only one type of UV ray, when there are actually two distinctly damaging types for which you need to be protected: UVA and UVB rays. The sun’s UVA rays leave a “burn” while UVB rays affect the skin at the cellular level, causing free radicals to develop and damage to cells (skin cancer). We call sunscreens and (clothing) that protect from both UVA and UVB rays “broad spectrum.” Beyond Coastal is a leader in broad spectrum sunscreen; our formulas offer broad spectrum protection while also containing natural anti-oxidants to fight UV free radicals.

Additional points: Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in the U.S. More than 1 million people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer each year. It’s been said that one blistering sunburn episode as a child more than doubles your chances of developing skin cancer later in life. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. One in three Caucasians will have skin cancer.
