Jared Nathanson, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and Professional Competitor joins the show.

Jared Nathanson is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under his father Todd Nathanson from Chatsworth California. One of the greatest “undiscovered” talents still in America, Jared’s career was first internationally recognized after placing 3rd in the World in 2009 in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu “Mundials” (“World” Championship). Nathanson was born on the 12th of October, 1983 in Tarzana California.  He started practicing Jiu Jitsu with Renato Magno, later to become the acclaimed general type character and front man of the team “Street Sport”. Shortly after he received his orange belt (the second rank in Jiu-Jitsu in 1995 Jared’s coach traded headquarters leaving him to world renowned champion and competitor Jean Jacques Machado. He would later train with Machado who would become his instructor for the next 13 years leading him to his brown belt (one belt prior to black).  One of the most infamous traits regarding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the time and effort it takes to become a black belt. Belt testing is not available as all training is battle tested against other competitors.  This system was designed so the practitioner may become a true expert in the art. Statistically, it takes approximately 10 years on average for a person to master a subject. This is taken into accountability within the Jiu-Jitsu system. It is not uncommon to receive a black belt after 15 plus years of training in some, if not most cases.

Soon Jared began searching for another way to sharpen his skills. In 2009 he became a student of 2 famous Americans stomping their mark into Jiu-Jitsu as the most dangerous and consistently competitive Americans to date: Bill “The Grill” Cooper and Jeff Glover.  Then in 2010 Nathanson found his final home with the Checkmat team, headed by multi-level champion and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu superstar Lucas Leite. During his search for the right team, he returned to the competitive arena to find success in every major event, capturing gold medals across every federation’s events. He began focusing his efforts on creating his own champions out of his father’s gym located in Chatsworth California, which would soon take on the name “Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”.

Spending a focused competitive year in 2009 after placing in the top 3 in world, he would later suffer repeated injuries on his knee from training accidents. He underwent surgery and had to endure a long recovery period. Though the immediate future looked grim for Nathanson’s competitive career, on his very first tournament since his recovery, he managed to win one of the most important trophies in his career, the Copa Pacifica 2010.  Although still not fully recovered, he was forced to compete cautiously and methodically in order to claim the victory; a testament to his skills, training partners, and team.
