A Belgian man discovers that a scratch from his cat caused an infection that led to symptoms of erectile dysfunction. If you begin to feel feverish after a cat scratch, seek immediate medical attention.

A 23-year-old man in Belgium found out the hard way that his cat had caused his symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

The man went to the local hospital’s emergency room after experiencing five days of fever, chills, night sweats, weight loss, and pain in his lower back, pelvis, penis, and testicles. He told the doctors that it hurt to pee and also that he was struggling with erectile dysfunction.

It Was Cat Scratch Fever

Tests for cancer, hepatitis, syphilis and HIV all came back negative, but the bone marrow and lymph node tests indicated that the man had the bacteria Bartonella henselae in his blood. Knowing that cats can harbor the bacteria, doctors asked the man if he had a cat. Not only did he have a cat, but the cat had recently scratched him.

The doctors determined that the man had invasive cat scratch disease, more commonly known as cat scratch fever, and after being treated with tetracycline for three weeks, he was fine. His erectile dysfunction went away, as did the pain in his penis and testicles.

What Caused the ED?

In most cases of cat scratch fever, symptoms simply include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and/or a pustule at the site of the scratch. Antibiotics usually aren’t even needed unless the symptoms get more serious.

In the Belgian man’s case, the rare symptoms of erectile dysfunction and penile and testicular pain were caused by the bacteria’s effect on the central nervous system. Specifically, the bacteria affected the pudendal nerve, which sends signals back and forth between the brain and the penis and testicles. Luckily, the effect on the pudendal nerve was only temporary. Permanent nerve damage could have led to long-term erectile dysfunction.

What to Do If a Cat Scratches

Although the bacteria Bartonella henselae is very common, cat scratch fever isn’t. Most cat scratches can simply be cleaned with soap and water with no ill effects at all.

However, if you get scratched by a cat and start to notice symptoms such as a fever, chills, night sweats, erectile dysfunction, or pain anywhere on your body, seek immediate medical attention. Be sure to tell medical professionals about the  scratch, which may help them to avoid unnecessary tests and home in on the right diagnosis faster.
