More young men are coming forward to report that they’re experiencing symptoms of erectile dysfunction. It’s not necessarily a new phenomenon but rather a sign that ED is finally coming out of the darkness, which encourages more of those suffering from it to speak up.
If you’re like most people, you probably associate erectile dysfunction with older men, but more and more, it seems that younger males are showing up at the doctor’s office to discuss problems achieving an erection. Why is this happening? Why does it seem like there is suddenly a massive increase in young men with erectile dysfunction? The answers might surprise you.
One thing that’s important to note is that it’s not necessarily true that more younger men are developing erectile dysfunction . . . it’s rather that they are now more comfortable speaking to their doctors about the issue than they have been in the past. In the past, erectile dysfunction was something that was rarely discussed, even in medical circles. Men suffering from erectile dysfunction were thought to have a masculinity problem, so they often kept quiet about it outside of the bedroom. Furthermore, this condition was thought to only affect older men, so younger men experiencing erectile dysfunction were doubly afraid to speak out.
These days, with erectile dysfunction and ED medications the topics of far more open public dialogue, younger men feel more comfortable talking to their doctors, and therefore, doctors are noticing an increase in younger patients with erectile dysfunction. Keep in mind that it took many years to get to this point. Viagra didn’t hit the market until 1998, so in 2018 it’s taken roughly two decades for younger men to start feeling comfortable seeking sexual health solutions for erectile dysfunction.
Stress and Anxiety
Another large piece of the puzzle is the stress that many young people feel today. Now, every generation experiences its own fair share of stress, and today’s generation of young men is no different. However, there are differences in how young men have been raised compared with previous generations. In the last three decades, there have been so many changes in technology, American culture, and financial expectations that young men today have faced and continue to face anxiety-causing factors. Things like owing $150,000 in student loan debt and still not being able to find a job could seriously weigh on a young man’s mind, even if he’s attempting to be intimate.
Likewise, due to stress and anxiety in today’s rapidly changing society, many young men have been prescribed antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications, some of which have caused side effects such as low libido and the inability to experience real emotion, both of which are key components in achieving an erection.
Side Effects Sometimes Persist

Even when men stop taking these medications, the side effects can linger for weeks or months. This leads some men to quit taking their meds in an attempt to achieve an erection, and when they don’t see immediate results, they go back to their medications, never knowing that if they had stopped completely, things would have rebounded. Of course, some young men need to continue taking medications for life, thereby making the situation even more difficult to deal with.
Something else to point out when it comes to anxiety and erectile dysfunction is performance anxiety. Many men have faced this issue in their sexual lives at some point. You begin to get intimate with your partner, and despite being very turned on mentally and emotionally, you simply can’t achieve an erection, and the harder you try, the more you end up concentrating on not being able to get an erection. For most men, this problem resolves on its own as they become more familiar and comfortable with their partners, but for some other men, performance anxiety is a lifelong issue.
Easy Access to Pornography
One startling reason for younger men experiencing erectile dysfunction is the rise of and ease of access to pornography, especially on the internet. Young men have always been drawn to pornography in its many forms, but these days, porn is just a click away on the internet. There are many free porn sites out there, and to make matters more difficult, young men can search for exactly what they want to see 24 hours a day.
The problem with this is twofold: First, some men have become so desensitized to the sexual experience because of watching so much pornography that when they are attempting to be intimate with a real-life human being, they aren’t experiencing the same thrill. Also, because internet porn allows men to find exactly what turns them on, they aren’t able to experience an erection unless that particular scenario, fetish, or female is involved. When faced with sex with a partner who does not look like or act like the thing they are used to, many young men have a hard time achieving an erection.
Second, online pornography use often leads to masturbation, and due to the high volume and availability of porn online, many young men end up masturbating more often. The issue with masturbation that is too frequent is that it can lead to different sensations than sexual intercourse. A man may grip his penis harder during masturbation, but during sex, he isn’t able to achieve the same sensation. This can lead to erectile dysfunction, because once again, he has gotten so used to feeling a certain way that nothing else works to get him or keep him aroused as much.
Substance Use and Abuse
Just like with prescription medications, other drugs may lead to erectile dysfunction, especially when addiction is involved. After a night of heavy drinking, it’s normal for men to have a hard time achieving an erection. This is partly due to a chemical cause, but it’s also because someone who has had too much to drink may have a hard time concentrating on the task at hand. The same can be true with other drugs, including marijuana.
However, when someone is addicted to a substance, the body is dependent upon it. When it doesn’t have that chemical, the body can go into survival mode, meaning it concentrates on nothing but obtaining that drug in order to feel normal. In a sense, the body has become so used to being exposed to the substance that it can’t function without it. When the body does have the substance, it may only concentrate on processing the substance, or the substance is at the root cause of the inability to achieve an erection.
Physical Causes of ED in Young Men

Finally, physical injuries, whether current or experienced early in life, may lead to erectile dysfunction. This is especially true of sports injuries to the groin at a young age. Boys are also known to wrestle and fight, and most don’t understand the future implications of kicking another boy in the groin. While it might seem like a good tactic to win in the moment, groin injuries at a young age can have long-lasting and far-reaching consequences.
Also, young men who are overweight and/or who are in poor health may experience erectile dysfunction. In today’s digital world, many young men find themselves spending a great deal of time sitting. Whether working at a computer for an employer or playing video games at home, young men these days are much more sedentary than young men of previous generations, and this can lead to cardiovascular disease and weight gain, two things that are associated with the development of erectile dysfunction.
Treatment Options for Young Men with ED
Thankfully, there are a variety of treatment options available to young men who are experiencing erectile dysfunction. First and foremost, medications are the go-to choice for most health care providers treating young men who have erectile dysfunction concerns. Some medications, like Viagra, can be taken as needed in order to enjoy a sexual experience, while others are taken on a daily basis to be able to achieve erections whenever the moment is right.
Additionally, if the issue is psychological in nature, mental health professionals are available to discuss topics such as stress, anxiety, and depression with young men who are experiencing erectile dysfunction. This approach is one that will likely take a while to produce results, but it can go a long way toward removing a mental block or helping to undo the damage caused by addiction.
Finally, for some men, surgical interventions may be required. This is especially true if a young man has become injured at some point in time, but it may also help if there has been a biological deficiency. Of course, surgery is always the last option, so discuss your specific medical history with your health care provider to see if things like medications can help before taking drastic measures.
