Why Aren’t There Sex Robots for Women?
Why Aren’t There Sex Robots for Women?

Move over blow-up dolls! Prototypes of sex robots are already in the works for straight men, but there seems to be nothing on the horizon for women (or gay men).

It’s a bit surprising, considering that, according to an article on Quartz.com, women make up half the purchasers of sex toys. And with The Guardian estimating the sex tech industry to be worth around $30 billion, it seems that manufacturers could be missing out on a slice of the profit pie.

Why is there so much focus on products for men?

Technology has always had a bias toward men, likely because the industry has largely been dominated by men making things for men. As Quartz.com reports:

  • Car seatbelts and airbags were designed to be safe for men, leaving them much more likely to fail when protecting the smaller stature of women.
  • Many of the earlier smartphones were designed for the larger hands of men, making them a bit more awkward in the smaller hands of women.
  • Despite the fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death for American women, Motherboard.com reports that the new artificial hearts only fit in 20% of women, as opposed to 86% of men.

The ethics of sex robots

There are arguments on both sides of the use of sex robots.

Some say that they provide a safe way for men to explore fantasies without having to worry about the fear or embarrassment of rejection or erectile dysfunction.

Others argue that settings like “frigid” that simulate rape make the world more dangerous for women, not less. Yes, there is actually a Frigid Farrah doll that promises: “If you touch her in a private area, more than likely, she will not be appreciative of your advance.”

Alternatives for shy men

Men who suffer from anxiety or fear that causes erectile dysfunction, or men who suffer from erectile dysfunction for physical reasons do have other options beside sex dolls or sex robots.

Talk to a counselor about your issues or ask your doctor for a prescription for an erectile dysfunction drug, such as Viagra, Levitra or Cialis.
