In an alarming report issued in early 2017, the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy revealed that only 4 percent of online pharmacies are selling prescription medications safely.
This joint report was based on an investigation into the operations of more than 11,000 online pharmacies.
The 2017 report is not the first to call attention to the pitfalls of ordering drugs online nor is it likely to be the last. As quickly as one of the shady Internet pill mills gets shut down, another springs up to take its place.
Eye-opening reports such as this make clear that consumers who value the convenience of buying their prescription drugs online should carefully check out potential vendors before placing their orders.
Less Than 500 Considered Safe
If you accept the report’s figure of roughly 11,000 online pharmacies, its findings mean that only 440 of these suppliers are doing a safe and effective job of selling and distributing prescription drugs online. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the remaining 10,560 suppliers are all dealing in counterfeit medications, though no doubt many do.
What it does mean is that these operations fail to meet reasonable standards for the sale of prescription drugs. And that failure could easily put your health at risk if you deal with such a supplier.
So what can you do to ensure that you’re dealing with a reputable and trustworthy online pharmacy? Here are some common sense criteria that you can use to judge the legitimacy of a potential supplier:
- Does the supplier require a doctor’s prescription or offer telemedicine-like consultations with licensed U.S. physicians who can authorize a prescription if appropriate?
- Does the online pharmacy have a verifiable physical location in the United States?
- Does the pharmacy’s website supply contact information, as in a zip code, that is consistent with the supplier’s purported location?
- Is there a toll-free or local area code telephone number for customer service or to place orders by phone?
- Does the website supply a phone number that allows customers to speak with a pharmacist?
Many Sites Sell Fake Drugs
In its report on the joint investigation with the NABP, the Chicago office of the Better Business Bureau noted that some of the online pharmacies it studied were trafficking in counterfeit medications. In such cases, the drugs being sold either contained none of the genuine drug’s active ingredients or contained amounts that were too low to be effective or so high as to be dangerous.
Inactive ingredients in FDA-approved medications are made up of every ingredient in the drug other than the active ingredients. Inactive ingredients generally consist of filler materials and coloring agents. FDA-approved inactive ingredients should have no effect — beneficial or adverse — on consumers taking the medication.
Careful laboratory analyses of counterfeit medications seized in customs raids across the globe have revealed fake drugs with potentially toxic inactive ingredients. According to a report from the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies, such ingredients have included commercial-grade wall paint, antifreeze, printer’s ink, road paint, rat poison, boric acid, and the fibers from sheetrock or drywall.
Consider a Reputable Online Facilitator

If you prefer the convenience of ordering via the internet, consider using a trustworthy online facilitator such as eDrugstore.com.
Based in Tempe, Arizona, eDrugstore is a member of the Secure Medical network of online facilitators and has been supplying select prescription and over-the-counter medications since the late 1990s.
It offers a full range of erectile dysfunction drugs, including Viagra (both brand-name and generic), Cialis, Levitra, Staxyn, and Stendra.
eDrugstore is a Better Business Bureau-approved business that sells only FDA-approved medications that are sourced exclusively from licensed U.S. pharmacies.
If you already have a doctor’s prescription, you can fax the script or scan and email it along with your order to eDrugstore. Alternatively, you can have eDrugstore set up a complimentary online consultation with a member of its team of licensed U.S. physicians. If you are found to be an appropriate candidate for the drug, a prescription will be authorized. As with all erectile dysfunction drugs, make sure they are not taken with nitrate-based drugs, which could lead to a life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
