Male impotence
Depression is just one of several psychological factors that can lead to erection problems.

Psychological factors collectively make up the second biggest cause of erectile dysfunction.

However, unlike blood flow-related ED, which is the leading cause of male impotence, psychogenic ED is not readily treated with medication and usually requires psychological counseling to identify the root causes of the problem so that they can be addressed and hopefully resolved.

It’s estimated that psychogenic ED accounts for 10 to 20 percent of all male impotence. Among younger men, erection problems of psychological origin are more common than they are among older men.

However, for those who suffer from this form of ED, it is all too often dismissed by others as something that’s all in their heads. While that may be true, it does nothing to make the impotence any less real. Here’s a brief summary of common causes of psychogenic ED.

  • Anxiety: Whether it’s generalized anxiety disorder or anxiety that’s linked specifically to performance, this can be a significant barrier to normal erectile function.
  • Depression: A depressed man often loses interest in things that once made him happy. And sex is usually a casualty.
  • Relationship Problems: A couple that’s having difficulty getting along with one another may find that discord follows them into the bedroom.
  • Stress: While just about everybody in today’s world is subjected to significant levels of stress, those who find themselves unable to cope with this pressure may find it difficult to perform sexually.
