Want to Avoid ED? Exercise

If you don’t exercise regularly, you’ll probably get a lecture from your doctor about how important it is for your body. It can help keep various organs working at peak performance: brain, heart, lungs, penis.

Yes, you heard correctly; your penis needs you to exercise!

How exercise fights ED

Because erectile dysfunction (ED) is often caused by a lack of blood flow to the penis, exercise can help in several ways.

Some exercise—such as Kegels—can strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor, which can help prevent impotence.

Aerobic exercise helps increase blood flow throughout the body and fights obesity, which can contribute to ED.

Exercise can also help prevent or control diabetes, which can contribute to ED.

Can all men prevent ED with exercise?

For some men, such as those who have had prostate surgery, exercise probably isn’t enough to avoid ED. Instead, they may need to use ED drugs, such as Viagra, Levitra or Cialis, or penis implants.

Men who smoke heavily or have advanced coronary artery disease many also need to rely on ED drugs.

There’s particularly good news for African-American men, who have largely been underrepresented in ED research. A study from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center found that men who exercise have better sexual and erectile function regardless of race.

How much exercise is needed?

The Cedars-Sinai study found that the more frequently a man exercised, the higher his sexual function scores. Specifically, men who reported 18 metabolic equivalents (METs) per week also reported the highest quality and frequency of erections.

The 18 METS can be gained through six hours of light exercise, 3.5 hours of moderate exercise or two hours of strenuous exercise. Regardless of what you do in terms of intensity, length or frequency of exercise, doing something is better than doing nothing. Just walking on your lunch hour may be enough to help with ED.
