If you ride the subway in New York City, you may have seen ads for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, or breast augmentation, or The Museum of Sex or the erectile dysfunction company Roman. But you haven’t seen an ad for the women’s sexual wellness company Unbound.
What’s in the ads?
The Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) rejected a series of hand-drawn ads for Unbound, a company that sells things like vibrators, lube and lingerie. The ads for Unbound don’t contain any nudity, the word sex or anything too blatant. There are some mostly hidden sex toys in the ads, but as Bustle reports, “Unless you looked really heard (like Where’s Waldo hard, but with sex toys) or were super familiar with current sex toys, you probably wouldn’t realize what the ads were for at all.”
Why the ads were rejected
A third-party company that approved ads for the MTA determined that Unbound’s ads broke a couple laws which prohibit “the dissemination of indecent material to minors” and “the public display of offensive sexual material.”
So, while Viagra and erectile dysfunction companies like Roman can openly promote their cures for erectile dysfunction, Unbound can’t even promote products for sexual wellness.
“Pleasure is a really big part of sexual wellness,” says Unbound’s co-founder and director of content Sarah Jayne Kinney. “If it’s important for someone with a penis to be able to get an erection, then women need to have access to the tools that help them get aroused.”
Viagra is in, Unbound is out
Kinney says that at first, Unbound’s team was concerned they wouldn’t get approved. But then they started seeing ads for Viagra, breast augmentation, The Museum of Sex and erectile dysfunction treatments and realized that ads were “push[ing] the envelope a little more.” Regardless, Unbound’s ads were rejected.
The founder of Roman admits there’s still a long way to go in terms of equality in advertising these types of products. “Unbound is one powerful example of this and is another strong reminder that there is still a tremendous amount of work to do,” says Zachariah Reitano. “Viagra has been advertised for 20 years; men’s health companies don’t have to face the same types of challenges that women’s health companies do.”
