Given the available evidence, you’re better off to resist the temptation to buy Viagra in Mexico. Prescription drugs sold in other countries are not subject to the same regulatory scrutiny over manufacturers and distributors that is mandated by law in the United States.

Mexican Viagra Is Not FDA Approved

The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t guarantee the safety of medicines bought during trips abroad and recommends getting your medication in the United States.

Warren Licht, M.D., director of medical affairs at Lenox Health Greenwich Village in New York City, is experienced in international travel medicine. He makes clear what the absence of such regulatory oversight could mean for the drugs you buy abroad.

“We’ve had problems with our own very regulated manufacturing process in the United States, where drugs had traces of carcinogens and were recalled,” says Dr. Licht. “If a drug is recalled in another country, you might not even know about it.”

Dangers of Fake Viagra

When you try fake Viagra and it doesn’t do anything for your ED, that’s the least of your concerns. In addition to not being effective, fake pills can be dangerous.

If you already have a health condition, such as diabetes or heart disease, and you’re on prescription medication, fake Viagra could cause unpredictable interactions. But even if you’re completely healthy, you never know what to expect.

An additional risk is drug overdose — since you can’t be sure what ingredients are in each pill — and in what amounts.

With unregulated or counterfeit medicines, you don’t know what you’re putting into your body. Analyses revealed that some fake ED drugs contained unsafe substances, including:

  • Amphetamines
  • Commercial grade paints
  • Other drugs, such as metronidazole, which can cause serious drug interactions, especially when mixed with alcohol

Risks of “Over-the-Counter” Mexican Viagra

The drugs you buy in Mexico might contain either the wrong active ingredient or not contain the correct dosage for your needs.

While many Mexican pharmacies are legitimate operations, some may carry counterfeit medications, which could be hazardous to your health. Still, you should suspect the quality control used in even legitimate operations. In an interview, primary care physician Ken Croen, M.D., told Kaiser Health News that “there’s a lot of junk in the pharmaceutical world.”

Some of these Mexican sildenafil counterfeits actually do contain some level of the active ingredient, but it may be too little to be effective or so much that it could be dangerous. Others may have no active ingredients at all but look almost identical to the real thing.

Another thing to avoid is so-called “natural Viagra.” Those herbal supplements can contain tainted ingredients. And even those pills that offer a genuine mix of herbs can be tricky, especially if you’re taking other medication or have a health issue.

Risks of Crossing the Mexican Border

Another factor that lures prescription drug buyers to Mexican pharmacies is the much more relaxed attitude about prescriptions. Many pharmacies south of the border don’t require prescriptions for medications that require scripts in the United States.

And there’s a reason for prescriptions. It’s to assure you the drug has been prescribed by someone knowledgeable of the drug and your particular medical circumstances.

If you bring such drugs into this country without a valid prescription in hand, border agents could very well seize those drugs, completely negating any savings you thought you’d achieved.

In practice, many border agents look the other way if you’re bringing in normal-size amounts (30 to 90 tablets) of innocuous prescriptions that aren’t considered controlled substances in the United States. But you never know how a particular border agent will react, and if it doesn’t go the way you want, you don’t really have any legal recourse.

U.S. Generic ED Drugs Are Safer

If the U.S. retail cost of a typical (50 milligram) dose of Viagra is a bit steep for you, consider sildenafil, its generic equivalent. You can get the same effects from a comparable dose of sildenafil citrate, and the average cost in the U.S. is often one-tenth the price of the brand-name drug.
