Celebrities, both young and old, admit that they’ve taken Viagra and can confirm that it delivers on its promise to improve erectile function. Almost all have positive experiences to recount.

Being rich and famous in no way protects against the frailties of the human condition, including erection problems that develop as a result of either physiological or psychological factors.

In fact, being rich affords many celebrities the luxury of trying Viagra’s little blue pill even if they don’t really need it. Many of today’s young celebrities admit to trying the drug just to see if it gives them an extra edge in the bedroom even though they don’t yet suffer from any real difficulties in getting an erection.

Dole Took Part in Trials

Actually, Viagra’s introduction to the American public began with an endorsement, albeit an indirect one — from a very famous politician, Bob Dole. The former U.S. senator from Kansas and unsuccessful 1996 candidate for the American presidency famously urged men to seek help for erection problems in TV commercials that began running in early 1999, a year after Viagra’s market debut.

Viagra, the first of the so-called PDE5 inhibitors to hit the market, made its U.S. debut in the early spring of 1998. A few months after the pill’s introduction, Dole acknowledged publicly that he had participated in the clinical trials for Pfizer’s wonder drug. He went further, declaring that Viagra was “a great drug.”

Pfizer Launches Ad Campaign

Although Viagra chalked up impressive sales in its first year on the American market, it came in roughly $200 million below Pfizer’s expectations, which had been for $1 billion in sales in 1998. To raise the drug’s profile and, hopefully, its sales, Pfizer in late 1998 hired Dole to do some TV commercials, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In the commercial itself, the veteran politician talks about being diagnosed with prostate cancer. His immediate concern, Dole says, was defeating the disease, but he was also concerned about possible side effects of prostate surgery, including impotence. While acknowledging that it’s a somewhat sensitive subject to discuss, he urges viewers to forget about any possible embarrassment and to seek help from their doctors. In the years since Viagra’s 1998 debut, it has been joined by a number of other PDE5 inhibitors, such as Levitra, Cialis, Staxyn, and Stendra.

How PDE5 Inhibitors Work

Similar to each other in action but differing slightly in chemical structure, the PDE5 inhibitors temporarily block the effects of the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, which can impede blood flow to the penis, essential for getting and keeping a strong erection.

In the years before his marriage to Jennifer Garner, actor Ben Affleck experimented with Viagra, but the results for him were not what he'd hoped for.

Although Dole was the first well-known figure to get on the Viagra bandwagon, many have joined him over the past 15 years. One of the most famous advocates of Viagra use was the late Hugh Hefner, founder of the Playboy empire. In launching Playboy magazine in the early 1950s, Hef is credited with bringing sexuality out of the darkness into the open, leading to a realization of the important role that it plays in our lives.

In a February 2011 article in The New York Times Magazine, writer Charles McGrath reported that Hefner, then 84, was still enjoying a relatively active sex life, “popping Viagra as the occasion warrants.” It’s also been reported that parties at Hef’s Playboy Mansion prominently feature bowls filled with the little blue pills.

Pele’s ED Awareness Campaign

Although he claims not to need any help getting and keeping an erection, Brazilian soccer great Pele participated in a series of TV spots designed to increase public awareness of impotence. Aired in countries around the world, Pele tells viewers worried about signs of impotence to “talk to your doctor. I would!”

The Pele TV ad campaign was launched in the early 2000s but interestingly was never aired in the soccer star’s native Brazil.

Actor Michael Douglas has been very frank about his use of Viagra, crediting it with giving him the extra potency he needs to keep up with his much younger wife. In an interview that appeared in an early 2010 issue of AARP Magazine, Douglas says he’s grateful that his wife “likes older guys.” He then goes on to note that “some wonderful enhancements have happened in the last few years — Viagra, Cialis — that can make us all feel younger.”

Affleck Admits Viagra Use

Not all celebrities have found their experience with Viagra as pleasurable as Douglas. Ben Affleck, much younger than Douglas and probably in no particular need of the extra boost provided by the little blue pill, told an interviewer for Playboy that he gave Viagra a try back in the late 1990s.

What prompted Affleck’s experimentation? Ben blamed peer pressure. “I figured it’s this old-guy drug. If you can’t get a hard-on, you take Viagra,” Affleck, 27 at the time of the interview, said. “But then these guys start telling me, ‘No, no, no, you can take it too, and it’s like you were 14 and jerking off six times a day.’ ”

Rising young actor Miles Teller admitted in an interview that he had tried Viagra and found that the little blue pill delivered on its promise.

For Affleck, the recreational fling with Viagra was pretty much a bust. “I almost had a heart attack. I had to sit down, and all it did was make me sweat and feel dizzy. And really unnerved. I felt no sexual side effects whatsoever.” Although his reaction to the drug was extremely uncommon, his experience points up the danger of using PDE5 inhibitors recreationally, a practice that Pfizer spokesman Geoff Cook told WebMD the drug maker has “consistently opposed.”

Recreational Use Continues

Nevertheless, curiosity continues to tempt young celebrities to try the little blue pill. Thankfully, most of them have not had any adverse side effects such as those Affleck experienced.

In an interview that appeared in Elle magazine, film actor Miles Teller said a friend in Las Vegas had given him one of the little blue pills, telling him, “Bro, break it in two and take it two hours before you’re ready.” Teller, best known for his star turn in The Spectacular Now, said he did as directed, observing that his friend was “right.”

For Rob Kardashian, part of the famed family so closely followed by reality TV viewers, the introduction to Viagra was accidental. In a 2009 episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Rob said he got a big surprise when he drank some of stepdad Bruce Jenner’s coffee, which unbeknownst to him contained a small amount of Viagra. “I woke up from a nap, and my penis was hard. It would not go away.”

Efron Dodges Question

Somewhat coyly, actor Zac Efron dodged a question about his Viagra use during an appearance on the Conan Show in 2014. “I can’t confirm or deny that,” Efron said. He then went on to say that he “had a friend of a friend try it, like a half of a half of a half of a Viagra.”

During a 2005 interview with Glamour magazine, actor Ashton Kutcher admitted to experimenting with Viagra. “I took it a few times recreationally,” he said. “It’s illegal (sic), but I’ve taken it.” Kutcher said that at the time of the interview, however, he hadn’t used the little blue pill in years.

Whether you’re a celebrity or just an ordinary Joe who’s experiencing some difficulties getting and keeping an erection, Viagra and the other PDE5 inhibitors offer a way to treat impotence that’s been shown to be effective and safe for most men.
