A drug company says they are ready to unveil a female version of Viagra. Sales for the ‘little blue pill’ have skyrocketed over the last few years, and now a pharmaceutical company believes Flibanserin will become the hottest sexual enhancement drug on the market for women.
There has been a lot of talk about such a drug since Viagra rolled out in 1998, but attempts have fallen short. The makers of Flibanserin, Boehringer Ingelheim, say they have found the right combination of ingredients to help the 10% of women they believe suffer from low sexual desire.
“The pharmaceutical industry has come up with Viagra to solve a major concern that men have had since the beginning of time,” June Reinisch, senior research fellow at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction told ABCNews.com when the first studies were publicized. “But until now, nobody has seemed that concerned about resolving what women might like.”
The company doesn’t have the green light yet, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has to give the go ahead. A panel of experts are scheduled to look into the drug this Friday.
According to reports, Boehringer Ingelheim realized the power of this drug by accident. Flibanserin was being tested as an anti-depression medication when the study’s participants reported a positive side effect, increased libido.
Unlike Viagra, which is used to treat male erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the genitals, this drug acts on the woman’s brain and central nervous system to enhance mood.
A recent study of 1,378 premenopausal women showed “significant improvement” in sexual desire while taking Flibanserin.
Beyond this study, the drug must show clinical improvement for women, effectively decreasing their level of distress about her sexuality for it to be considered by the FDA.
