79670595 – subway train in motion arriving at a london underground train station
You might expect public transportation users to forget their umbrella, coat or books, but Viagra, wigs and sex toys?

Yes, Transport for London (TfL) has found some pretty interesting items on public transportation and perhaps even more surprising, people sometimes come back for them.

Viagra, sex toys, and wigs, oh my!

The Sun reports that TfL’s lost property is almost like a party waiting to happen. Thanks to some very honest people, some of the crazier things found on London’s trains, buses and black cabs (and turned over to Lost and Found) include:

  • Viagra (11 times)
  • Sex toys or aids (33)
  • Wigs (141)
  • Crutches (877)

It’s probably a safe bet that some folks later noticed they had left behind their Viagra or sex toy but were too embarrassed to visit Lost and Found. But there were a few brave souls: four owners reclaimed their Viagra and two people went in looking for their sex toys.

An increase in lost goods

In 2017 TfL received 332,077 items that were left behind, 5% more than in 2016. The items that could be sold were. In 2015, TfL made more than 900,000 pounds (over $1.18 million) from selling the items that were left behind.

Obviously, Viagra and sex toys aren’t resold, which begs the question: do the transit employees ever take anything home?

How TfL’s Lost and Found works

An article in The Guardian reports that about 1,200 new items arrive at TfL’s Lost and Found daily. Among the most common items left behind: keys, mobile phones, bags, and umbrellas.

About 20% of the items are claimed within 90 days. Then the items are donated to charity, sold or tossed out.

But there have been some other surprising items collected on public transit: a giant stuffed gorilla, a 40-inch TV, musical instruments and power tools, to name a few.

When people do come to claim their lost property, they sometimes give the lost property staff a “thank you” gift. The most popular item? Doughnuts.
