Health authorities have found sildenafil, Viagra’s active ingredient, and tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, in a number of unlikely products. However, their presence was not noted on the products’ lists of ingredients.
Sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, has made it possible for millions of impotent men to regain erectile function and once again enjoy relatively normal sex lives. However, most folks would probably agree that there are some places where sildenafil simply doesn’t belong.
Dietary supplements and children’s candy are probably high on that list of products. Nevertheless, recent headlines indicate that health authorities worldwide have found the erectile dysfunction drug as an unlisted ingredient in some of those products. Supplements Recalled
In November 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Med Man Distribution was recalling all lots of its Up2 dietary supplement after testing found that the product contained sildenafil as an unlisted ingredient. In late February 2020, Med Man expanded that recall to include all lots of its Bow and Arrow supplement.
Both Up2 and Bow and Arrow were advertised as libido enhancers. For the record, sildenafil has been shown in clinical tests to increase blood flow to the penis, making it an appropriate treatment for erectile dysfunction. However, no evidence exists to suggest that the drug will fire up the libido or sex drive of either men or women. Furthermore, its unlisted presence in these supplements poses a major risk to those who use them and also take nitrate-based drugs for the treatment of angina pectoris.
Both sildenafil and nitrates lower blood pressure. Taking them together could trigger a life-threatening drop in blood pressure. But because neither Up2 nor Bow and Arrow listed sildenafil on their labels, users would be unaware that the drug was present.
Hidden in Candy
In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health announced that candy sold under the Energy Candy label was found to contain tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis. The candy’s labels, however, made no mention of this extra ingredient. Included under the Energy Candy umbrella were ExtrAli Energy Candy, Extra Strong Energy Candy, and Mixed Fruit Candy.
Found in Off-Brand ED Drugs on Craigslist
Meanwhile, in Canada, law enforcement authorities arrested two North Vancouver men who were charged with selling off-brand ED drugs that actually contained the active ingredients of Viagra and Cialis. The drugs were offered for sale without a prescription and were advertised on Craigslist.
