Have you heard of the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?” Well, in the case of our favorite little blue pill, one scientist’s failed blood pressure medication is another man’s answer to erectile dysfunction (ED). That’s right, what we know now as Viagra today was actually discovered when scientists’ blood pressure medications were producing interesting side effects in miners more than 20 years ago.
Let’s look back on what more than 2 decades of research on Viagra has taught us thus far.
Lesson 1: Viagra’s helped raise awareness of ED in society.
That’s what researcher Dimistris Hatzichristou found in his article reviewing three years of clinical experience with Sildenafil citrate (what we know as Viagra). Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the sale of Viagra in 1998, men have flocked to their primary care physicians, and now online retailers like eDrugstore, to get their hands on the magical little blue pill. The introduction of the pill onto the market did more than spark people’s interest in the drug; it also helped raise awareness of the number of men who suffer from this disorder. As many as 15-30 million men in the United States alone experience erectile dysfunction. The good news is that we now have an effective, well-tested treatment to combat it.
Lesson 2: We know that Viagra is most likely due to issues with circulation.
Thanks to a plethora of research on the subject, we can disprove ED myths like these:
- ED only affects older men
- Poor habits can’t affect ED
- ED is in your head
Now we know that ED can affect men well under middle age and that lifestyle factors can inhibit good sexual health. Further, though sex therapy can be effective in addressing cognitive issues contributing to ED, like depression and anxiety, physiological, circulation-related issues are linked to ED in men. In fact, not only are phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5i) like Viagra effective in treating erectile dysfunction, they also can help circulation-related issues in people suffering from early stage heart failure.
Lesson 3: Viagra’s helped change the way we talk about sex.
We’re a sex-consuming culture, from pornography to steamy sex scenes on many popular TV networks today, we can’t get enough of it (or get away from it). But stigma, conservative beliefs, and religious views make off-screen conversations about sex happening more precarious. This was even more the case two decades earlier, before Viagra hit shelves. After its release, however, exciting conversations about sex, erectile dysfunction, and Viagra emerged.
The Future Looks Bright
We’ve come a long way since Viagra advertisements were limited to airing after 11 pm as long as they didn’t mention the word sex, or when prices sat at $50 per pill. Now, ED medications are available for a few dollars per pill, depending on the retailer. Thankfully, men now have options other than injectable medications, pumps, and implants. With more than 65 million prescriptions filled worldwide, one of the best inventions in the last quarter century is no longer a best kept secret.
