Viagra May Help Fight Colon Cancer

After studying the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and its effects on colon cancer in mice for 10 years, researchers have some big news: the Viagra cut the development of colon cancer by half.

Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University found that a small dose of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, cut the formation of polyps by half. Polyps are the abnormal clumps of cells that can turn into cancer eventually.

It’s a big breakthrough, considering that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women in the United States.

The Viagra research

Although the Viagra helped cut the cancer development in the mice, there’s no telling whether or not it will have the same results in humans. But there’s already a plan to hold a clinical trial in the next couple years for patients who are at the highest risk for developing colorectal cancer.

These high-risk individuals include people with a family history of colon cancer or those with inflammatory bowel disease or polyps.

Viagra is the most popular erectile dysfunction drug in the world, and also the most counterfeited. It’s manufactured by Pfizer and often referred to as “the little blue pill.”

About Viagra

Viagra comes in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablets, but for most men, the recommended dose is 50 mg. Once your doctor determines your tolerance and the effectiveness of Viagra on your erectile dysfunction, he may increase or decrease your dose. Viagra also comes in single packs.

Viagra requires sexual stimulation to work, so it doesn’t just give you an erection automatically. Viagra typically starts working in 30 to 60 minutes and you can take it up to four hours before sex.

You can take Viagra with or without food, but note that high-fat foods may cause a delay in how fast Viagra kicks in.
