Italy’s ubiquitous gelaterias — shops selling gelato, Italy’s unique take on ice cream — are getting a bit more than the usual interest these days, thanks to a new flavor that’s been popping up in a number of shops of late. Bright blue in color just like Pfizer’s iconic little blue pill, this new addition to the gelato selection is dubbed “Viagra gelato.”
Alas, reliable reports out of Italy knock down any hopes that the new gelato selection offers the same erection-friendly effects as Viagra, the erectile dysfunction pill that was introduced to the world in 1998. However, although Viagra gelato contains no sildenafil citrate, the ED drug’s active ingredient, it does reportedly contain traces of some African herbs that have long been reputed to have aphrodisiac properties.
Herbal Contents Unlisted
Exactly which herbs are in Viagra gelato remain a mystery, according to an article posted at Italylogue.com, a website devoted to travel in Italy. However, Viagra gelato proudly takes its place alongside a handful of other gelato flavors that are decidedly unique. These include riso, which tastes like rice pudding and even features grains of rice to add to its authenticity; cinnamon-flavored cannella; and liquirizia, which tastes like black licorice. Other memorable gelato flavors include stracciatella, which is perhaps best known as Italian egg drop soup but in gelato form is more akin to chocolate chip ice cream, and zuppa inglese, the gelato maker’s version of England’s popular trifle dessert.
Of the African herbs used by native herbalists in the treatment of ED, perhaps the most famous is yohimbine, derived from the bark of the yohimbe tree, native to west-central Africa. Other herbal aphrodisiacs widely used in Africa include the roots of Mondia whytei, known locally as Mkombelo and native to eastern Africa, and Aframomum melegueta, also known as grains of paradise. The latter is a member of the ginger family that grows mostly in western Africa.
Media Outlets Take Notice
Whatever (if any) erection-friendly properties this new gelato may possess, it is getting a fair amount of press. As for how this flavor tastes, it probably depends upon the gelateria where it’s actually produced. Some first-person reports liken the gelato’s flavor to bubble gum, while others say it tastes more like licorice.

For those unfamiliar with gelato, which can also be purchased in gourmet shops in the United States and elsewhere around the globe, it begins with a custard base that is similar to that of ice cream. However, gelato contains more milk and less cream and eggs than does ice cream. In fact, many gelatos are made without the use of any eggs. Also, gelato tends to be denser than most ice creams, because it is churned at a much slower rate than ice cream and thus incorporates less air.
Viagra Ice Cream
As novel as Viagra gelato may seem, it’s not quite as unique as a special batch of Viagra ice cream that was whipped up a few years back by inventor Charlie Harry Francis, founder of Lick Me I’m Delicious, a U.K.-based ice cream producer.
Francis’s Viagra ice cream was produced on request from an unnamed celebrity client and unlike Viagra gelato, this blue-tinted ice cream contained the real article. Reportedly, each scoop of this special ice cream had about 25 milligrams of sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra. Francis dubbed his special creation “Arousal,” and given its generous levels of sildenafil, Viagra ice cream was likely to produce the desired results.
Viagra Taste?
Talk of a Viagra-flavored gelato or ice cream is actually pretty meaningless, since Viagra is not chewed but swallowed with a gulp of water, thus producing little or no discernible flavor at all.
Interviewed by the Los Angeles Times in April 2014 about his Viagra ice cream, Francis said he flavored the special batch he created with champagne, which seems somehow appropriate for a dessert he estimated to cost $33 a scoop. As previously noted, this special batch of Viagra ice cream was created to fill the request of a client and was never available to the general public.
Erection-Friendly Foods
As far-fetched as Viagra ice cream and gelato may seem, a number of natural foods reputedly contain nutrients that are known to temporarily improve blood flow, thus facilitating erectile function. As noted, these are natural foods and not processed food products, such as ice cream and gelato.

It should be noted that none of the foods listed below represents a cure for erectile dysfunction, but then neither do the oral ED medications known as PDE5 inhibitors. In both cases, these foods and ED drugs contain compounds that can temporarily improve blood flow. Compromised blood flow to the penis is the largest single cause of male impotence.
Bananas: Loaded with potassium, bananas can help men to achieve harder and more long-lasting erections. The fruit’s high levels of potassium helps to keep the body’s sodium levels under control, which tends to prevent high blood pressure and thus facilitate strong blood flow. Bananas also contain significant levels of magnesium and manganese, which promote prostate health, and also tryptophan, a mood enhancer.
Clams: This popular shellfish helps to support and promote erectile dysfunction because of its high levels of arginine, a naturally occurring amino acid that the body needs to produce nitric oxide, a key player in the erection process. Clams also contain high levels of vitamin B12 and zinc. The latter helps to bolster the body’s production of testosterone, which plays no direct role in erectile function but can help to increase sexual desire, without which an erection is of little use.
Salmon: This popular fish’s high levels of omega-3 fatty acids also stimulate the body’s production of nitric oxide, which is essential to normal erectile function.
Spinach: It’s no wonder that Popeye’s legendary appetite for this leafy green vegetable helped him to win the heart of Olive Oyl. Spinach is rich in arginine, which promotes the production of nitric oxide, and it also contains a number of phytoecdysteroids. Two of those plant-based steroids — ecdysterone and dehydroepiandrosterone — are believed to promote healthy erectile function.
Pomegranates: This fruit and its juice contain high levels of arginine, again essential for nitric oxide production, and antioxidants, which help to promote overall health and wellbeing. An Israeli study found that regular consumption of pomegranate juice over a period of three years reduced the plaque lining artery walls by an average of 30 percent. This reduction in plaque naturally leads to improved blood flow and thus promotes erectile function.
