Almost every one of us has complained from time to time about a cup of coffee that “kept me up all night long.”
That common complaint took on a whole new meaning recently when the Food and Drug Administration reported that it had found that a brand of herbal coffee contained an undisclosed ingredient strangely similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
In the wake of the FDA’s announcement, Bestherbs Coffee LLC, based in the Dallas suburb of Grand Prairie, announced that it was voluntarily recalling the product, which carries the cumbersome brand name of New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee. The company offered full refunds to all customers who had purchased the product.
Not Really All Natural
Marketed as a “male enhancement” product, the herbal coffee claimed that its erection-friendly properties came from natural ingredients that have been used by herbalists for centuries to improve erectile function in men with symptoms of impotence. However, the FDA said it was more likely due to the presence of an unlisted ingredient known as desmethyl carbodenafil, which is similar in chemical structure to sildenafil citrate, Viagra’s active ingredient.
Otherwise healthy men suffering from the symptoms of erectile dysfunction probably enjoyed whatever hidden benefits the product offered. However, it could be potentially life-threatening if taken by men who were also being treated with nitrate-based medications for angina or intractable high blood pressure. Both nitrates and the sildenafil analog in the coffee cause a sharp drop in blood pressure and can be extremely dangerous if taken in combination.
What’s an Analog?
In the pharmaceutical sense of the word, an analog is a chemical compound similar in structure and effect to a controlled substance or legitimate medication that aims to avoid detection by drug regulatory authorities. In this case, FDA scientists were able to detect the presence of the sildenafil analog in the coffee.
A spokesman for Bestherbs said that the now-recalled coffee brand was sold in the United States from July 2014 through June 2016. It was marketed on the internet and also offered on the shelves of some health food stores. Interviewed by the Washington Post, Albert Yee of Bestherbs said that he decided to import the product into the United States after seeing it marketed openly in Malaysia. “There are whole streets of it, like tequila in Mexico,” said Yee.
The FDA report about the Viagra-like substance in the imported coffee also noted that milk was yet another undisclosed ingredient in the herbal product. While its presence would probably cause no problems for most users, individuals who are lactose-intolerant or otherwise allergic to dairy products could experience severe reactions.
Another Herbal Coffee Implicated
This is not the first time that sildenafil analogs have been found to be undisclosed ingredients in herbal coffee marketed to American consumers. Less than a year earlier in September 2016, the FDA issued an advisory warning consumers to steer clear of Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee, a product that was touted for its “all-natural” energy-boosting products. In fact, Stiff Bull was also found to contain desmethyl carbodenafil, the same sildenafil analog found in the herbal coffee distributed by Bestherbs.
Not surprisingly, a wide array of herbal sexual enhancement products, most marketed as “all-natural” solutions to the problem of erectile dysfunction, has been found to contain undisclosed ingredients identical or similar to the active ingredients in prescription ED drugs.
In the same month that the federal drug regulatory announced the voluntary recall of the Bestherbs herbal coffee, the FDA issued advisories about four other such products, all of which were found to contain unlisted ingredients. These four advisories were all issued on July 17, 2017, four days after the Bestherbs announcement.
One Product Contains Sildenafil
In the first of the four advisories issued on July 17, the FDA advised consumers not to buy or use an herbal male enhancement product called RHINO 7 Platinum 5000. The agency said that the product contained sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
Similar advisories that same day warned consumers against using products called Royal Honey VIP, Kingdom Honey for Him, and Kingdom Honey for Her, all of which were found to contain tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, another best-selling prescription ED drug.
In June 2017 alone, consumers were warned to steer clear of 13 sexual enhancement products, all of which were found to contain unlisted chemical compounds identical or similar to active ingredients in ED drugs. In some cases, these herbal products also contained chemical ingredients that had not been approved by the FDA.
Multiple Drugs in Some Products
The drug regulatory agency warned consumers not to buy or use Triple X 2000, which it said contained both tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, and dapoxetine, a chemical compound said to help prevent premature ejaculation. Dapoxetine has not been approved by the FDA for that or any other use. The agency also found that Triple Premium Zen Gold 1300mg, distributed by SHH Trading, the same company as Triple X 2000, contained sildenafil, tadalafil, and dapoxetine.
FDA’s June 2017 warnings about tainted sexual enhancement products also targeted other SHH Trading products marketed as XXX Zone Platinum (sildenafil, tadalafil, and dapoxetine), Triple Miracle Zen Plus 1200mg (sildenafil and tadalafil), Macho Man 3000 (tadalafil), Monster X 1350 (tadalafil), and Own the Knight 1750 (tadalafil and dapoxetine).
The June 2017 advisories from the drug regulatory agency also warned against the use of three other sexual enhancement products from SHH Trading: Royal Master 1500 (tadalafil), Xzone Gold (sildenafil and tadalafil), and Love Zen 3000 (tadalafil).
Three Other Products Targeted
Unaffiliated with SHH Trading but also targeted in FDA’s June 2017 advisories were Super Panther 7K (sildenafil and tadalafil), Man of Steel (sildenafil), and Man of Steel 2 (sildenafil).
These herbal products, marketed as health supplements, are not subject to the same stringent testing requirements as prescription medications and may not be tested at all unless the FDA receives consumer complaints about the products.
