The Female Viagra May Be an Electric Shock to the Ankle
Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered a technique to stimulate a woman’s sex drive that some are calling “the female Viagra.” Viagra is the top-selling (and most counterfeited) erectile dysfunction drug in the world.

The female version of erectile dysfunction

The ankle shock works by lightly stimulating the tibial nerve, which runs from the sole of the foot to the bottom of the spine, and by boosting blood supply.

The lead researcher, biomedical engineering expert Tim Bruns, says, “We are very hopeful this could help many women who suffer from sexual dysfunction. Some studies say 10% of adult women have arousal disorder, but others report it’s as high as 28%.”

Although the initial research was done on mice, the researchers are now running a trial on women with arousal disorder, something that is believed to affect up to 45% of women.

How erectile dysfunction works in men

As with erectile dysfunction in men, arousal disorder in women can be caused by physical or mental issues or a combination of the two. But often, when women aren’t interested in sex, it’s often first assumed that it’s psychological. With men, however, it’s often first assumed that it’s physical.

When men see their doctor to request a prescription for Viagra, the goal is often to rule out any underlying health concerns that could be causing the erectile dysfunction, such as diabetes or heart disease.

But more often than not, when a woman sees her doctor about a lack of arousal, the doctor may first ask questions regarding possible infidelity, relationship issues, stress or depression.

Regardless of the cause, Viagra works for more than 80% of men with erectile dysfunction, and we can only hope that a slight shock to the ankle will work for at least 80% of women with arousal disorder.
