Viagra, which is known for being the first FDA approved drug in treating erectile dysfunction, works by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down a chemical within the body called cGMP. The Study of Viagra and Pre-diabetes
A recent clinical study looked at the condition known as “pre-diabetes”, which much like its name suggests, is a condition that occurs, preceding the full development of type 2 diabetes.
At this stage of the disease, the patent’s levels of sugar in the blood is documented to be higher than normal, which can eventually lead to organ damage, blindness and even loss of limbs through amputation.

According to the latest research, without intervention, approximately 30 percent of patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes will go on to develop type 2 diabetes within five years. But, the results of those preventative actions in warding off the progression to type 2 diabetes are not exactly stellar.
With the rapid increase in the prevalence of the disease each year; the number of U.S. adults aged 18 years or older with diagnosed diabetes has more than tripled in recent years according to the CDC, it is clear that more needs to be done.
How Can Viagra Help Pre-diabetes?
The recent research suggests a few key ways that taking Viagra helps patients with pre-diabetes. First it seems to improve insulin sensitivity in people with pre-diabetes. The findings also indicated that Viagra may also protect against heart and kidney disease because those taking the erectile dysfunction pills had lower levels of albumin in their urine – a biological marker for these conditions.

Weight loss and exercise regimens can be difficult to maintain, and some current medications have been limited by concerns about adverse effects,” Dr. Brown stated. “But, Sildenafil (Viagra) and related drugs could offer a potential avenue for addressing the rising number of diabetes diagnoses.”
Research Study Details
Funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the study found that Viagra (sildenafil) improved “insulin sensitivity” in overweight, pre-diabetic people. Insulin sensitivity involves the body’s ability to efficiently use the hormone. The study involved 42 overweight people with pre-diabetes who were treated with either Viagra, 25 milligrams, three times per day, or they were given a matching placebo pill to take during a three-month period of time.
The research team reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, that they had conducted tests, referred to as a hyperglycemic clamp, to the participants to measure how much insulin was being produced by the body- in response to sugar in the blood, and how sensitive the person was to the insulin hormone.
This testing was given before and after the trial period of treatment with Viagra or a placebo pill. Indicators of heart and kidney health, albumin and creatinine, found in urine samples were also measured through sampling.
The study found:
- Among the 42 participants who completed the study, Taking Viagra improved insulin sensitivity in people with pre-diabetes
- Participants who took Viagra also had lower levels of albumin in the urine than those who took placebo.
Essentially, by the end of the three-month trial period, those taking Viagra were more sensitive to insulin and also had lower levels of albumin in their urine, which is a biological marker of higher risk for heart and kidney disease, than the group taking the placebo pill.
But this study does not come as any great surprise to those in the medical field who understand the science behind Viagra and what it does. Drugs like Viagra are known to have beneficial effects that go beyond treatment of erectile function, and include the function of the endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels, according to a recent statement by Dr. Ronald Tamler, medical director at the Mount Sinai Clinical Diabetes Institute in New York City.
The Discovery of Viagra
