The expiration dates on prescription medications are largely arbitrary and don’t necessarily mean that the drug will be ineffective if taken after those dates. Popping a Viagra tablet that’s past its expiration date is unlikely to do you any harm, although it might be somewhat less effective than if taken in a timely fashion.
Rooting around in your medicine cabinet, you’ve discovered a prescription bottle for Viagra that’s apparently been overlooked for some time. The expiration date for its contents has already passed. What do you do?
Well, unless you’ve got money to burn, you can feel fairly safe in taking the pills even though they are now past their expiration date. Exceptions should be made if the tablets are discolored, broken, or sticky.
Expiration Dates Are Arbitrary
According to Drugs.com, expiration dates are pretty much arbitrary, representing a date two or three years down the road when the drug’s manufacturer has chosen to test its stability. In other words, the expiration date doesn’t necessarily represent the point at which the drug has lost its effectiveness or become markedly less effective.
While it’s extremely unlikely that a drug taken past its expiration date would be harmful, it could be somewhat less effective than if it were taken earlier. However, certain medications are much more subject to deterioration than others and should be discarded if not used by their expiration dates. According to Drugs.com, such medications include:
- insulin, which is highly susceptible to degradation after its expiration date
- oral nitroglycerin tablets, which tend to lose their potency more quickly than other such medications once the prescription bottle has been opened
- biologics, blood products, and vaccines that tend to degrade quickly once their expiration date has been reached
- medicine that’s showing obvious signs of age, such as crumbling or powdery tablets, drugs with a strong odor, or dried-up ointments or creams
Government Stockpiles Vital Drugs
The structural integrity and continuing effectiveness of most medications past their expiration date has been extensively tested by federal government agencies in recent years. In preparation for the possibility of public health emergencies, the U.S. military and other government agencies stockpile huge quantities of certain basic medications that might be vital in the wake of such events.
Given the expiration dates routinely stamped on these products, the government faced the possible restocking of these drugs every three or four years. That would be an extremely costly undertaking. To determine if these medications were effective beyond their expiration dates, the government in 1986 initiated the Shelf Life Extension Program, or SLEP.
Most Drugs Hold Up Well
SLEP testing has confirmed that a large number of prescription drugs in those stockpiles remained stable and potent well beyond their respective expiration dates.
So what’s the worst that could happen if you choose to take a Viagra tablet that’s clearly past its expiration date? It might not work as well as you hoped, but it almost certainly will pose no particular threat to your health.
