An untreatable cancer
But for men with nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer that isn’t treatable with the typical androgen deprivation therapy, the prognosis is significantly worse once the cancer has spread throughout the body.
But the oral androgen receptor inhibitor Apalutamide may provide hope. While currently there are no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatments for nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, Apalutamide has just been given priority-review status by the FDA.
Hope from Apalutamide
Apalutamide works by inhibiting the action of testosterone in prostate cancer cells and prevents androgen (a natural steroid hormone that regulates the production of male characteristics) from binding to the receptors.
The FDA made the review a priority after seeing the results of a trial that compared the results of men with nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer taking Apalutamide vs. a placebo. The men in the study all had rapidly rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, even after receiving androgen deprivation therapy. Generally, the higher the PSA level, the greater the probability of cancer.
The FDA is expected to make a decision about Apalutamide in April 2018.
“Men with nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer need treatment options that can delay disease progression and improve long-term outcomes,” says Dr. Craig Tendler, vice president of late development and global medical affairs in oncology at Janseen, the pharmaceutical company that makes Apalutamide. “We are encouraged by the FDA’s recognition, via the priority review designation, of the potential for Apalutamide to provide such an option for these men.”
