Although it’s hardly a new phenomenon, the counterfeiting of Viagra continues even after less-expensive generics have become available in the U.S. and other parts of the world. The crackdowns continue, though, because these fake drugs often contain harmful ingredients.
A Selection of Headlines from Recent Years
Among the headlines in recent months have been these:
- 140,000 Fake Viagra Pills Seized in Shenzhen. The Nanfang Insider reported on April 2, 2014, that Shenzhen drug enforcement officers and local Shekou police officers had seized more than $800,000 worth of phony Viagra at a counterfeit drug wholesaling den.
- France Seizes Record Stash of Fake Viagra, Pills from China. Reuters reported on April 10, 2014, that French customs officials had made the largest seizure of counterfeit pills in European Union history. The stash, taken into custody at the port of Le Havre, consisted of 2.4 million fake pills, including not only counterfeit Viagra and Cialis but fake aspirin and anti-diarrheal medication.
Pakistani Man Sentenced in Counterfeit Viagra and Cialis Case. In a May 2, 2014, press release, the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations reported that 45-year-old Mohammad Jamal Rashid had been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of illegal importation of and trafficking in counterfeit Viagra and Cialis.
Vietnam Arrests Chinese Man for Trading in Fake Viagra. Tuoitrenews.vn, “the news gateway of Vietnam,” reported on May 9, 2014, that Ho Chi Minh City police authorities had arrested a Chinese man and charged him with street sales of fake Viagra and illicit sex toys.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs issued a May 20, 2014, press release reporting that 26-year-old Nasif Baqla of Houston, Texas, had pled guilty to charges that he conspired with others to traffic in counterfeit prescription drugs, including fake Viagra.
Fake Viagra Scam Trial Is Halted after Defendant Is Run Over Outside Court. From the United Kingdom, the Grimsby Telegraph reported on May 22, 2014, that an Old Bailey jury hearing a fake Viagra case had been discharged after one of the three defendants was seriously injured in a collision outside the court. Police Bust Fake Viagra Ring in Spain. Agence France-Presse reported on May 28, 2014, that Spanish authorities had detained 13 people suspected of trafficking in large quantities of fake prescription drugs, including counterfeit Viagra.
5 Charged with Illegally Importing Fake Viagra. On May 29, 2014, MyFoxAtlanta.com reported that five people were charged for illegally importing mislabeled products from China. The report said the products in question contained the active ingredient in Viagra — sildenafil citrate — that can only be obtained in the United States after being prescribed by a licensed physician.
Viagra, the first FDA-approved drug to treat impotence, has been among the world’s best-selling drugs since its introduction in the 1990s. Although other drugs that produce similar results have come to market in the years since Viagra’s introduction, the little blue pills from Pfizer remain the best-selling impotence drug in the United States, and Viagra is a close second to Cialis in international sales.
Cialis was only able to overtake Viagra in international sales when Pfizer’s patent for Viagra expired in Europe in mid-2013. The pharmaceutical giant’s U.S. patent for the drug won’t expire until April 2020.
Viagra a Tempting Target
Viagra is a much sought-after drug, but its price per tablet is relatively high, which proves tempting to counterfeiters who can sell fake Viagra tablets for much less than Viagra’s current selling price and still reap a handsome profit.
However, for the buyer of counterfeit Viagra, the cost can be far greater than simply paying for a medication that is ineffective. By their very nature, counterfeit medications are produced without the oversight of national and international agencies that are dedicated to guaranteeing the purity and safety of ingredients used in the drugs’ manufacture.

Printer Ink Found in Fake Viagra
In other words, fake Viagra can — and often does — contain virtually every imaginable substance that counterfeiters can lay their hands on in an attempt to closely duplicate the appearance of the authentic pills manufactured by Pfizer. According to Pfizer, fake Viagra tablets have been found to contain blue printer ink, used in attempt to copy the pill’s trademark blue color, and binding agents, such as drywall, which prevent the pills from breaking down in your system.
Also found in some counterfeit Viagra have been amphetamines, also known as “speed;” Metronidazole, a powerful antibiotic that can cause an allergic reaction, diarrhea, or vomiting; and excessive amounts of Viagra’s active ingredient — sildenafil citrate — that can cause serious health problems.
CBS Chicago Report
In a November 2011 report for CBS Chicago, investigative journalist Dave Savini went along with U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents as they raided filthy warehouses that were filled with counterfeit prescription medications, including fake Viagra. CBP officials told Savini that counterfeit Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra — all used to treat erection dysfunction — are flooding the market. In 2010 CBP agents seized 330 shipments of fake impotence pills. In 2011 the number nearly quadrupled to 1,200 such seizures.
CBP spokesman Brian Bell told Savini that the fake pills can be dangerous for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the unsanitary conditions in which the fakes are manufactured. Bell said raids in Montreal found pills in which commercial-grade paint was used as a coloring agent. In Ecuador, pill mills were found to be using boric acid, and pills made in a Colombian pill mill were found to contain rat poison. Fake pills manufactured in Hungary contained dangerous levels of amphetamines.
Fake Pills Could Kill
Bell said that CBP and the FDA are hoping their crackdown on phony pill mills will slow traffic in counterfeit medications, especially since some of the pills seized have 10 times the dosage of that active ingredient that is found in real Viagra. “That could kill somebody very easily,” said Bell.
