Viagra has been around long enough that it would be learning to drive if it were a human. In the nearly 16 years since the introduction of Viagra, several other medications for erectile dysfunction (ED) have made it to market, yet there’s no Viagra equivalent for women yet.

Several drugs, such as ORL101 and Flibanserin, have been tested, but have not received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Other drugs are in development, and there’s no indication when or if they will make it to market in the US. Recently a new over-the-counter supplement called Lady Prelox became available in the UK, and it claims to increase female sex drive and pleasure.

What Is Lady Prelox?

Lady Prelox is a pink pill that’s taken twice daily. It contains Pycnogenol, a patented extract that comes from French pine bark and is described as “100% natural.” Just as Viagra is designed to work along with sexual stimulation, Lady Prelox is supposed to increase drive and pleasure for women during sexual activity. The company that makes the product, Pharma Nord, says the plant-based extracts improve circulation, and by doing so, improve sexual satisfaction.

What Did the Study in Italy Show?

Pharma Nord and Chieti-Pescara University in Italy conducted a study of 100 healthy women of 37 to 45 years of age with moderate sexual dysfunction. All women underwent a lifestyle management program involving dietary management, exercise, and stress control. One subset of the group also took Lady Prelox for eight weeks. Sexual function was measured using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire at the beginning of the study, after four weeks, and after eight weeks. Plasma free radicals were also measured to determine oxidative stress.

After four and eight weeks, mean total FSFI scores increased in both groups, but treatment values were “significantly higher” in the Prelox group than in controls. Oxidative stress decreased in both groups, with the Prelox group having a more significant drop in oxidative stress. The study reported no unwanted effects, and that none of the women taking Prelox stopped taking it during the study.

Pycnogenol reportedly optimizes production of nitric oxide in artery walls, allowing them to relax so that blood flow increases. However, other studies of Pycnogenol have concluded that not enough is known about the substance to make claims about using it for treatment of any chronic disorder.

Is It Worth Buying?

Lady Prelox is currently only available in the UK, where it retails for £37.95 (approximately US$63.29) for 60 tablets, representing a one-month supply. While there’s no indication that taking Lady Prelox is dangerous in any way, consumers are advised to be skeptical about its claims, since only one small study has been conducted with the product.

However, the lifestyle changes alluded to in the clinical study, such as dietary management, stress reduction, and exercise, can also improve sexual satisfaction through improved overall health, and these don’t require a prescription or a trip to the pharmacy. ORL101 is not expected to be available in the US any time soon, and other drugs designed to improve women’s sexual satisfaction, like Flibanserin (which has undergone trials in the US and unsuccessfully submitted data to the FDA) also remain unavailable, so women’s choices are limited.
