With sales of almost $5.7 million in its first three month, Pfizer’s over-the-counter Viagra has been quite a hit in Britain. When, if at all, will OTC Viagra become available in the United States? It’s a tricky question, and if it happens in the U.S., it won’t be any time soon.

Pfizer’s decision to begin marketing Viagra over the counter in Britain has been a smashing success, based on sales figures from the product’s first three months on the market.

Branded Viagra Connect, the little blue pill pulled in nearly $5.7 million during its first quarter of availability, stretching from late March 2018 to late June 2018. In all, roughly 860,000 tablets were sold, based on data posted at the website of The Sun.

Viagra Connect is available in packets of four 50-milligram tablets priced at about $26.45, or just over $6.60 per tablet. It’s also available in packets of 28 tablets, which cost just under $150, or about $5.36 per tablet. Among the U.K. retail chains selling Viagra Connect are Boots, Asda, Morrisons, Superdrug, and Tesco.

UK First to Get Viagra OTC

The United Kingdom is the first market in which Pfizer has opted to take Viagra over the counter. Considering the success of that debut, it may well seek permission to sell the little blue pill OTC in other major markets.

Because consumers pay out of pocket for OTC products such as Viagra Connect, the product’s popularity should significantly cut the British National Health Service’s annual bill for Viagra.

While the United States would obviously be an extremely lucrative market for this OTC product, market observers doubt that such a marketing strategy will win approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration anytime soon. In the past, the drug regulatory agency has expressed concern that men with erectile dysfunction would then simply buy Viagra without first being evaluated by a physician. Because ED can be an early warning sign of more serious illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, bypassing the doctor might mean that these health problems would go undetected until late in the game.
