At a medical conference focused on counterfeiting, the makers of erectile dysfunction drug Viagra demanded that Jamaica take action against an epidemic of fake Viagra circulating through the country.
Although part of the problem is that individuals are selling fake Viagra, perhaps the bigger issue is that so are certain pharmacies.
At least one man was reported to have died from taking the fake erectile dysfunction pills, and the level of trust in Jamaican pharmacies has decreased.
Pfizer is encouraging Jamaicans to come forward when they find out that a person or pharmacy is selling the fake Viagra.
“So, we are saying if you know of a pharmacy or know of a person, you can just put it on a piece of paper,” says Pfizer’s security consultant Percival Jordan, “and we will develop that in conjunction with the local authorities, and that’s all we ask of you.”
Fake Viagra—even at pharmacies
Unfortunately, many Jamaicans see the surge of fake Viagra as little more than a joke, despite the seriousness of the issue. One person went so far as to say that Jamaican men don’t believe in erectile dysfunction.
But Counter-terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch Assistant Superintendent of Police Victor Barrett said that Jamaican’s love of the fake Viagra is nothing to laugh at.
“Buy from pharmacies that you have a long-standing relationship with,” he advises. “Read and trust your gut. Just be cautious when you are buying drugs.”
Viagra in the United States
Men with erectile dysfunction can get Viagra in the United States via a prescription from their medical provider.
The FDA-approved erectile dysfunction drug requires a prescription for Viagra to ensure that what men get aren’t tainted with toxins. Requiring men to see a doctor for Viagra also helps ensure that they discuss underlying health conditions that could be causing the erectile dysfunction.
