Viagra
Pfizer, headquartered in New York City, is the international pharmaceutical company that revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction when it introduced Viagra in 1998.

Pfizer’s U.S. patent on Viagra expires in April 2020, but the pharmaceutical giant seems determined to retain its role in the erectile dysfunction drug market well beyond that date.

In the meantime, it has found a number of ways to capitalize on its longtime leadership in that market.

Under Pfizer’s licensing agreement with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, that company was allowed to begin marketing its generic version (sold as sildenafil citrate) of Viagra in the United States beginning in December 2017.

For this privilege, Teva must pay Pfizer royalties until the latter’s U.S. patent on Viagra expires.

Pfizer Subsidiary Selling Generic Viagra

But Pfizer wants a slice of the U.S. generic market as well, and Greenstone LLC, a Pfizer subsidiary specializing in generic drugs, rolled out its generic Viagra at the same time as Teva’s version was making its bow.

Unlike brand-name Pfizer’s diamond-shaped blue pill, Greenstone’s generic Viagra comes in white tablets that are also marketed as sildenafil citrate.

OTC Bid Made in UK

Leaving no stone unturned, Pfizer won permission from U.K. regulatory authorities to begin marketing Viagra over the counter in that country beginning sometime in the spring of 2018.

This opens up yet another avenue for marketing the drug and could foreshadow a similar attempt to go OTC in the United States at some point in the future.

If the convenience of ordering Viagra — or its generic equivalent — online appeals to you, consider using the services of eDrugstore.com, a longtime online facilitator that offers a full range of ED drugs and select other lifestyle medications.
