A study out of Sapienza Universita di Roma in Italy has found that men who don’t get enough folic acid may develop erectile dysfunction.

Past research linking folic acid deficiency to erectile dysfunction

Although past research had linked lower folic acid levels to abnormally high levels of homocysteine in the blood, which is believed to cause erectile dysfunction, the new study’s researchers had another theory. The new research, which was published in the journal Aging Male, theorized that decreased folic acid intake might create a decline in nitric oxide activity, causing erectile dysfunction.

The new research linking folic acid deficiency to erectile dysfunction

Although the study was small—it only looked at 31 men with erectile dysfunction and a control group—it’s notable that the men with erectile dysfunction had significantly lower levels of folic acid than those without erectile dysfunction. Plus, the men who had the lowest folic acid levels were also the men who had the most severe erectile dysfunction.

It’s interesting to note that the new research found that folic acid levels didn’t correlate with abnormally high levels of homocysteine in the blood, as was previously theorized as the cause of erectile dysfunction when folic acid levels are low.

Treating erectile dysfunction in the United States

Men in the United States suffering from erectile dysfunction can try getting more folic acid in their diets, either through food or with supplements. Foods high in folic acid include leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, breads, cereals, rice and pasta.

Men with erectile dysfunction may also want to get a prescription for an erectile dysfunction drug, such as Viagra. Viagra works for more than 80% of men and is the most popular erectile dysfunction drug in the world.

A prescription is required for Viagra so the FDA can ensure that men are getting a pure, effective erectile dysfunction treatment.
