Thousands of woman suffering from depression complain about the side effects of medications that are supposed to curb the symptoms of depression. More than half of the people taking these drugs complain about lowered sex drive. The drugs, which effect serotonin levels, can mess with the pleasure center of the brain which leads to diminished orgasms. Now a study shows the same little blue pill that helps men get an erection, may ramp up a woman’s sex drive.
Is Viagra the answer?
A recent study shows Viagra, known for helping men with sexual problems, may help depressed women enjoy sex once again. The study followed 98 patients with an average age of 37. All of the women were taking antidepressants and agreed to be part of the trial. Each woman agreed to commit to sex at least once week while taking a pill before sex. They didn’t know if they were taking Viagra or a placebo. The results showed 72% of women taking Viagra did have improved orgasms compared to those not taking the pill.
While the trial was successful for a majority of patients, several people reported side effects. Headaches, reddening of the skin, and indigestion were reported in those taking the Viagra.
The effects aren’t the same for women as they are in men. Viagra helps men achieve an erections, but in this study patients said Viagra “helped them feel the rush of an orgasm.” They did not have an increased sex drive while taking the drug.
The pros and cons
Pfizer, the group that manufactures Viagra, said they have no intention of pursuing approval for the drug to be used in this way. The company did explore the sexual benefits Viagra could have on women, but found it works best for men.
Doctors advise all patients to consult a doctor before taking Viagra for this use.
