The Daily News poster with the headline Too Good To Be True
It pays to be cautious when the claims for a product seem too good to be true.

Magnalife water, developed in Dubai, is being widely touted as a cure for just about all the ills of the world, including erectile dysfunction. Essentially, Magnalife is ordinary drinking water that has been altered in structure using the principles of nanotechnology (the study of matter at the subatomic level).

According to its developers, Magnalife’s curative properties stem from its extra hydrogen ions that have nanoparticles making it easier to penetrate cells and attack the free radicals said to cause the cell damage associated with aging and various diseases.

Its claims to treat ED rest largely on a single study conducted by a team of Iraqi urologic researchers. The researchers compared the effects of Magnalife water, ordinary bottled water, and tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, on 271 men with ED. The ED patients were randomly divided into three groups and were treated for the next three months with either Magnalife water (20 milliliters per kilogram of body weight), 5 milligrams of tadalafil, or ordinary bottled water (also 20 milliliters per kilogram of body weight).

Erectile Function Checked Before and After

Study participants’ levels of erectile function were assessed based on responses to erection-specific questions on the International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire. At the study’s end, those given Magnalife had gone from moderate to mild ED, while those given tadalafil had gone from moderate ED to no ED. Those who got bottled water began and ended with diagnoses of moderate ED.

Not exactly a stellar performance. And it’s unclear if those who got Magnalife benefited to some extent from the so-called placebo effect. In any case, it will take a great deal more evidence before Magnalife water can truly claim to qualify as a cure for ED.

Meanwhile, Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, continue to help men overcome their symptoms of ED on a daily basis.
