On the market now for more than two decades, Viagra and the family of similar drugs it spawned are still the treatment of choice for the vast majority of men with erectile dysfunction. Its active ingredient is apomorphine, and it is said to increase brain levels of dopamine, which promote sexual desire.
- Stem cell therapy: While this form of treatment has shown promise in animal and preliminary clinical trials, it has not yet been approved by the FDA as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. In Danish clinical trials, stem cells derived from the patients’ own abdominal fat cells were injected into the erectile tissue of the penis, restoring erectile function to some of the impotent participants in the study.
- Gene therapy: Attendees at the 2018 annual meeting of the American Urological Association were told that a gene transfer procedure known as Maxi-K gene therapy could offer help to impotent men who don’t respond to PDE5 inhibitors. According to an ABC news report, early testing produced promising results, and the therapy’s developers hope to have a product on the market by 2020.
