Parents don’t appreciate this line of questioning if it comes from someone who can barely see over the counter. But the inquisitiveness of all the Little Johnnys and Little Susies out there has finally paid off.
The Parents Television Council (PTC) announced that it has come to an agreement with Pfizer (maker of Viagra) and Lilly (maker of Cialis) to publish, in advance, a list of television advertisements on the major networks. GlaxoSmithKline (maker of Levitra), would have participated in the early release of TV ads too, but Levitra is no longer advertised on TV.

PTC President Tim Winter said this is an important first step for the ED drug manufacturers to undertake. He vaguely alluded to more ED policies the PTC would like to implement. “PTC will push for an even more effective solution for parents,” he said.
This could include limiting ED ads to appear only after 10 p.m. local time. In fact, U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) recently tried unsuccessfully to introduce legislation that would do just that.
There aren’t many surprises as far as the most popular television shows on which you will find ED advertisements this week, but CBS’s show “The Mentalist” was a bit of a shocker for a Cialis ad. Other Cialis advertisements this week will include those on:
- 60 Minutes
- Evening newscasts (6:30 or 700) on every major network except FOX
- ABC’s Nightline
- NASCAR, Major League Baseball Playoffs, Sunday Night Football
- Late-night hosted comedy shows on every major network except FOX
Although Viagra’s advertisements appear on 60 Minutes, the late-night comedy shows above, and two NFL football programs, they do not appear on evening newscasts except for Nightline.
The deal to release the ED ads was apparently in the works for about two years since a representative from the PTC presented at a Lilly shareholders meeting.
The PTC states that its mission is to “promote and restore responsibility and decency to the entertainment industry in answer to America’s demand for positive, family-oriented television programming.” The organization provides a Family Guide to Prime Time Television with red, yellow, and green lights for content. But the PTC doesn’t stop there. For instance, it recently took a hard stand on the provocative music video just released by Miley Cyrus.
Many parents who were not aware of the PTC’s efforts will surely thank the organization for allowing them to put down the remote and escape Little Johnny’s questions about erectile dysfunction, Viagra, and Cialis.
