Unapproved Erectile Dysfunction Remedy Sickening Children
Poison control gets calls about kids swallowing supplements about every 24 minutes, according to the National Poison Data System. In many cases, supplements can be dangerous for kids, especially supplements that contain unregulated, unapproved ingredients like Yohimbe, a tree bark extract that some cultures use to treat erectile dysfunction.

Yohimbe tree bark extract can be poisonous

Although the list of supplements that can be dangerous for children is long, 2017 welcomed a new stand-out: yohimbe tree bark extract.

An article published in the Journal of Medical Toxicology found that that yohimbe tree bark consumption created the most serious problems of all supplement poisoning, including kidney failure and heart rhythm changes.

Some regulatory agencies in the United States also reported accounts of seizures due to yohimbe and, depending on the size of the person and how much they ingested, yohimbe can be fatal.

Although most calls to poison control organizations regarding accidental ingestion of supplements were for children under six, 78% of the calls for yohimbe ingestion were for children six and over.

Of the accidental exposures to yohimbe that were reported:

  • At least 1.3% of the cases were serious
  • More than q quarter of the cases caused moderate harm to the child
  • 3.2% of the children were admitted to critical care
  • One child died

Treating erectile dysfunction with yohimbe tree bark extract

In Africa, yohimbe tree bark was used as a medical staple for centuries, treating leprosy, fever and erectile dysfunction. In the United States, yohimbe started getting popular in recent years as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and for low libido in women.

But there is no clinical data to back up the efficacy or the safety of yohimbe tree bark extract for the treatment of erectile dysfunction or low libido in women.

The only FDA-approved erectile dysfunction drugs available in the United States are available by prescription. They include such well-known names as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
