Regular exercise is an important part of an overall regimen designed to promote good overall health and to preserve normal erectile function.
However, it seems that there can be too much of a good thing, particularly when it comes to certain forms of exercise, such as heavy weightlifting.
Such intense exercise tends to increase blood pressure, which is incompatible with healthy erectile function.
An article at SteadyHealth.com examines the findings from a study of 250 men who participated in heavy weightlifting training for periods of six months or more.
Questioned about their sex lives, more than half of the study participants reported that they suffered from some degree of erectile dysfunction. Told that their intense exercise routines were to blame for their impotence, many of the men were reluctant to accept this finding because they’d been told previously that exercise was essential to maintain healthy erectile function.
Study participants then were asked to refrain from heavy weightlifting for a period of 60 days, and despite their skepticism almost all the men agreed to do so. At the conclusion of this period, the vast majority of the study subjects reported significant improvements in erectile function. Those who had been using ED drugs, such as Viagra and Levitra, to overcome symptoms of impotence now reported that they no longer needed the medications to get and keep erections suitable for intercourse.
Further evidence that overdoing it with certain forms of exercise poses a threat to male sexual function comes from a recent study conducted by three researchers from the University of North Carolina. Their study, published in the July 2017 issue of “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise,” found that intense, long-lasting endurance training negatively affects the male libido.
