Research indicates that regular sexual activity helps to support robust erectile function. Although there’s no definitive proof, it’s a theory that’s worth acting on.
There’s a lot of talk these days about keeping an active sex life to help avoid erection problems later on. But is this hype, or is it science?
It seems logical. Exercise part of the body that you want to keep strong, and it will reward you by staying healthy. Certainly, rich, oxygenated blood flowing into the penis is a good thing, as is an erection itself, for its ability to keep the tissue pliable.
But can having more sex really help protect you against erection problems as you age? The answer is “maybe.”
Does Sex Help Keep Erections Strong?
It was 2008 when a Finnish study revealed the connection between more sex and a lower incidence of erection problems, according to The American Journal of Medicine. More than 900 men between the ages of 55 and 75 participated in the study, which had follow-ups over the next five years.
Of all participants in the study, approximately one-third reported erection problems. Men who reported having sex once a week or less were twice as likely to have erection problems as men who had sex more than once a week.
The findings of this study showed researchers that intercourse once a week or more actually has a protective quality that guards against developing erection difficulties. Furthermore, the more sex men have, the better their erectile health becomes.
WebMD explains that Juha Koskimaki, MD, PhD, an author of the Finnish study and a urologist at Tempere University Hospital in Finland, believes sexual activity serves as a protector for the nerve endings that supply the penis, as well as the blood vessels that support erectile function.
Koskimaki also says frequent erections can help prevent scarring in the spongy chambers in the penis that engorge with blood during an erection.
There are other experts in urology who debate the conclusion that more sex equals better erection health for the long term. However, WebMD also explains that even naysayers agree that one key to erection health is erections.
Causes Behind Erection Difficulties

It seems like for every bad habit and health condition, there’s the possibility for a link to erection problems. Even something as seemingly unrelated as the potential link with gum disease is being studied, because so many men with gum disease also have erection problems.
Two of the more well-documented causes include heart disease and diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic. In fact, problems achieving and maintaining an erection are now considered to be an early warning sign of heart disease. This is because the blood vessels that supply the penis are very small, and can be affected by blockages sooner than blood vessels in other parts of the body.
Diabetes can damage both nerve endings and blood vessels, giving people with the condition a higher likelihood of developing erection problems. Prostate problems can also be directly related to ED.
Obesity is another culprit, but the rationale here is a bit more muddled than with other causes. Where obesity is a problem, there’s a higher incidence of heart disease and diabetes. So while the link is valid, it might be more closely related to the diseases that obesity can cause, rather than a direct link between being overweight and erection problems.
There are also psychological links, including depression, high levels of stress, and, according to the Mayo Clinic, relationship problems. The latter could even be a catch-22. Where erection difficulties exist, relationships might suffer. And if relationships suffer, there’s a higher chance of erection problems.
Furthermore, bad habits such as drinking to excess, tobacco use, and the use of illicit drugs all have their own ties to erection difficulties, too. It seems that for every problem, there is at least the potential for a link to poor erection health.
Other Ways to Support Erection Health

Controlling health conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes can help. Where obesity is a problem, losing weight can improve erections, too, according to Harvard Medical School. Excessive body fat can interfere with the normal production of certain hormones that affect erection health.
Harvard also explains that walking regularly, eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of vitamin B12, and doing pelvic floor exercises regularly can all help support erectile function. Walking on its own has been linked to a 41 percent lower risk of erection problems.
Pelvic floor exercises, commonly known as Kegels, work in a few ways. They can help improve erection firmness and also help keep blood in the penis during an erection. And according to the Harvard article, men who participated in a three-month British study saw good results from twice-daily Kegels combined with biofeedback and lifestyle changes such as quitting tobacco, losing weight, and lowering alcohol intake.
Erections aren’t truly restricted to one part of the body. They begin in the mind and involve the spine, nerve endings, blood vessels, and naturally-occurring chemicals. Nearly anything that you can do to improve your overall health has the potential to benefit erectile health.
ED Drugs Pave the Way
You might think advice on having more sex, and having it more often, sounds great, but with erection problems, it’s not exactly easy. That’s where today’s erection health medications can really help.
Medications such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Staxyn, and Stendra help erections happen the way that they normally would. They don’t create erections, but they remove certain roadblocks that otherwise interfere with the erection process.
Even if your erection health isn’t as good as you’d like it to be, you might still enjoy the benefits of regular erections by the addition of a simple oral medication to your routine. Talk with your doctor and find out if one of these is right for you.
