Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to your overall health and well-being. For men, poor sleep quality appears to increase the risk of erectile dysfunction.

Research has found that men who are unable to sleep well at night, whatever the reason, are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction than sound sleepers.

There are a host of reasons why men who aren’t getting a good night’s sleep might also be at a higher risk of erection problems. Perhaps the most simple and straightforward of those reasons is fatigue. If you’ve been up most of the night trying to get to sleep, you’re probably too tired to get it up for sexual activity.

Other Sleep Disorders

Nocturia and other forms of urinary incontinence interrupt sleep at multiple intervals during the night, making it difficult, if not impossible, to get a good night’s sleep. And sleep apnea, a condition in which the sleeper’s breathing repeatedly stops and starts, is also associated with poor sleeping habits, as are restless legs syndrome and circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

In a study published in the April 2018 issue of The Journal of Urology, a team of researchers affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine confirmed the link between poor sleep quality and ED. On the upside, they concluded that improved sleep quality usually leads to significantly improved erectile function.

Sleep Is ‘Third Pillar of Health’

Published online in The World Journal of Men’s Health in August 2018, a study by Jae Wook Cho and Jeanne F. Duffy also links poor sleep quality with a higher risk of sexual dysfunction, including ED. The authors note that sleep is widely considered to be the “third pillar of health,” which along with diet and exercise have a determinative effect on an individual’s health. Anything that disturbs sleep on a regular basis is believed to have a negative impact on overall health, including sexual function.
