Stem Cells from Your Gut May Help Erectile Dysfunction
If you’ve read anything about erectile dysfunction (ED), you probably know that being overweight can be a contributing factor. But a recent study presented at the European Association of Urology conference may have found some irony in that fact.

Using stem cells from the gut

Researchers at Odense University Hospital in Denmark studied 21 men who had prostate surgery, which led to ED. The scientists decided to inject stem cells from the men’s abdominal fat cells into the corpus cavernosum—the cylinder that runs the length of the penis—to see if it would help the men’s erections.

Why stem cells from the abdomen? According to one of the researchers, it’s because they were the easiest to obtain through liposuction.

The research team found that of the men who were urinary continent after their prostate surgery, 57% saw their ED reversed after the stem cell treatment and were still able to get erections one year after their stem cell injection.

How the stem cell treatment works

The short version is that when your penis can’t get enough oxygen, you can’t get a full erection. This, in turn, impedes blood flow, which you need to get hard.

The abdomen stem cells prevented oxygen loss, which allowed the men to get the blood flowing to their penis.

The researchers are hopeful that the stem cell treatment will also work for men with ED due to diabetes or high blood pressure, conditions involving blood flow issues.

The advantages of stem cell treatment for ED

Although the study was quite small and only looked at men who had ED due to prostate surgery, the results were promising.

It’s particularly important to note that the treatment had very few side effects and allows for spontaneity, which is always a concern for men when dealing with ED.
