A Canadian study of 2,800 couples explores their preferences in erectile dysfunction drugs, specifically Cialis or Viagra. Buoyed by its long-lasting effects, Cialis wins by a wide margin.

Plenty of studies have explored the effectiveness of erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra and Cialis.  Researchers have shown how the drug works, what it does to the body, and the reaction men have to it.  But for the first time a study asked women which sexual enhancement drug they prefer their man to take.

A Canadian study asks a group of more than 2,800 men and women to take part in what researchers call a “real world study.”  They wanted to find out which drug, Viagra or Cialis, is preferred by couples.

All of the men in the study were already taking an erectile dysfunction drug.  Researchers then asked the group to switch medications.  If they were taking Viagra they switched to Cialis and vice-versa.  Questionnaires were filled out by the couple while the man was taking Viagra and again while taking Cialis.

It turns out that couples prefer Cialis.  Both patients and their partners said Cialis had a better effect on their sex life than Viagra.  Up to 70 percent of the men picked Cialis, and up to 75 percent of their partners chose it.

What Gives Cialis the Edge?

So, what makes Cialis the winner in this study?  According to questionnaires filled out by participants, Cialis gives a couple a longer window of time to have sex.  Cialis can last for 36 hours.  It doesn’t mean a man has an erection for that long, but if a man is aroused anytime in those 36 hours, he probably will be able to get and keep an erection suitable for intercourse.

Viagra, on the other hand, only lasts for four or five hours.  Once that time frame expires, another pill can’t be taken for at least 24 hours.

Researchers also found out that about 75 percent of men do talk to their partner about taking an erectile dysfunction drug, but few couples actually go to the doctor together.  Just 12 percent of couples had an open conversation with their doctor about the options that could enhance their love making.

Researchers hope this study will change that, encouraging more couples to take charge of this once-taboo issue together.
