Parents say they don't kids exposed to shocking commercials during the Super Bowl.
Parents say they don’t want kids exposed to shocking  commercials during the Super Bowl.
Even if you’re not a fan of the Broncos or Seahawks, you’ll probably watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. Big companies shell out big bucks to get attention during the biggest sporting event of the year. But not every commercial is kid-approved. From the scantily clad models to erectile dysfunction commercials, some parents would rather shield their kids from the spots.

What kind commercials are most popular during football?

The Super Bowl attracts 108 viewers. Spots sell for $4 million. Studies suggests that 50 percent of the Super Bowl audience will tune in just to watch the commericials, so it’s easy to understand why companies are willing to go to great lengths to get your attention.

The variety of commercials that will air in this year’s Super Bowl is hush-hush, several companies have started “leaking” commercials on social media sites to get even more attention before the game.

Every pro football game comes with its share of attention-grabbing spots. A study by the non-profit group Common Sense Media reviewed nearly 6,000 commercials in 60 NFL games during the 2011 season and found that 300 ads were for alcohol, 40 percent of the games featured erectile-dysfunction drugs, 500 ads involved significant violence, including gun fights, explosions and murder, and 80 commercials involved big-time levels of sexuality.

What’s a parent to do? Tips to explain uncomfortable commercials

Wake Forest University professor Christy Buchanan says you should ask a child what they think the commercial is about and respond to their perceptions. You don’t have to go into detail. Answer questions in broad terms and leave it at that.
