Taking aspirin or NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen on occasion for common ailments like headaches and minor arthritis pain should not adversely affect erection health. Long-term use, however may be problematic due to the underlying health condition.

Over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs) are widely used for common complaints like headaches and minor arthritis pain. Low-dose aspirin is sometimes prescribed as a preventative measure for people who have had heart attacks. Both aspirin and NSAIDs affect the circulatory system, so do they have an effect on erectile dysfunction, which is often associated with less-robust cardiac health?

According to a study published in the British Journal of Urology, the effect is minimal at best. Furthermore, the association between NSAID use and ED goes away almost completely when you control for whether the users of the NSAIDs were taking them for conditions that are already associated with higher ED risk. In other words, it is the underlying health condition that is associated with increased risk of ED, and not NSAID use itself.

The underlying conditions of study participants that were associated with higher risk of ED included chronic musculoskeletal pain, headaches, and sciatica. These conditions are often associated with poorer cardiac health, excess weight, and generally non-optimal health, and it makes sense that people suffering from these conditions would be likelier to report problems with erection health.

Long-term use of NSAIDs may be associated with higher ED risk, usually due to the underlying conditions treated by the NSAIDs.

That said, long-term use of NSAIDs has been associated with increased risk of cardiac issues. Prescription NSAIDs (such as diclofenac) are more strongly associated with heart risk than are over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen. Kidney and stomach problems can also result from long-term use of NSAIDs. It is safe to say that any health issue that either precedes or results from long-term use of NSAIDs could affect erection health. So it’s not a good idea to take them long term unless directed to do so by your physician.

In short, if you take aspirin or NSAIDs on occasion because of headaches, minor arthritis, or musculoskeletal pain, you’re probably not endangering your erection health. If you take the drugs long term, or if you take them for a serious underlying health problem, you may be likelier to experience ED, but this is probably related to the underlying health problem and not the NSAIDs themselves.

here’s a list of some of the most common NSAIDs:
